Mets manager Willie Randolph may have been snubbed by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, but at least one organization is giving him his due, the Bergen Record reports. The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum have awarded Randolph the Charles Isham “C.I.” Taylor Award, given to the National League Manager of the Year. The award represents a lot more than just a silver medal to Willie, whose office is adorned with photographs of Negro League greats. He plans to fly to Kansas City today to accept the honor.

Pop says Eli’s got fire

The critical gaze of the media continues to fix its eye on first round bust Eli Manning in the aftermath of the Giants’ disappointing season. In his column for the New York Post, Steve Serby wonders aloud how Giants’ fans will take it if they’re forced to watch Phillip Rivers lead the Chargers to the Superbowl, one year after Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger did the same thing in Pittsburgh. The Giants passed on both Rivers and Roethlisberger in order to select Manning, trading away several key draft picks in the process.

Amid all the criticism, Eli’s father and former Saints’ QB Archie Manning has come to his son’s defense. According to Archie as reported in the Bergen Record, Eli has a fire in his belly that has yet to manifest itself in New York. But after watching Eli take a more assertive leadership role in his senior year at the University of Mississippi, the elder Manning is confident that Giants’ fans will witness the same transformation …
