At last the Yankees have put their cards on the table, offering Bernie Williams an invitation to spring training, as reported on yesterday. If he accepts and joins the Yankees in Tampa, he would be a non-roster invitee, meaning the deal is not guaranteed and represents no commitment whatsoever by the Yankees. In recent seasons, elder statesmen – such as Al Leiter – have accepted similar invites in order to experience one last training camp with their teammates before retiring at the end of camp. However, in an interview last week, Yankee catcher Jorge Posada indicated he thought it was unlikely that Bernie would accept a non-guaranteed deal, and would probably retire instead, though he allowed that the 38-year-old Yankee outfielder could seek a roster spot elsewhere. Michael Morrissey of the New York Post believes that Williams could find the offer insulting, citing a report that he was “stung” by the move. The 2005-2006 NHL season was a surprise success for the New York Rangers, who had endured seven straight seasons without a playoff appearance. During the year, head coach Tom Renney often spoke of establishing a work ethic and team identity, and while Jaromir Jagr quickly became the face of the franchise, the heart and guts of the squad was embodied by the fourth line of Ryan Hollweg, Dominic Moore, and Jed Ortmeyer. The line was known for its speed, hustle, and aggressive forecheck, and was quickly dubbed the HMO line as all three role players became instant fan favorites.

A year later, the 2006-2007 Rangers find themselves in a very different situation, struggling to find a semblance of consistency, and battling for their playoff lives, despite the key free agent acquisitions of Brendan Shanahan, Matt Cullen, and Aaron Ward. The HMO line is a thing of the past, with Moore traded during the offseason for the disappointing Adam Hall, and Ortmeyer only recently returning from a pulmonary embolism suffered over the summer. …
