From Rick Carpiniello of the Journal News:

“The NHL can say what it wants about its popularity, but it stinks (the Islanders and Devils were both outrated by New York Titans indoor lacrosse last Saturday; the Devils with a low-as-you-can-go .01 rating).”

Reports of plummeting attendance and ratings for NHL games have been a hot topic as of late, but it seems that it took a lacrosse game to break the camel’s back. The New York Titans recently launched their inaugural season in the National Lacrosse League, so naturally they were eager to alert the news media that the telecast of their match against the Rochester Knighthawks was watched on SNY by 10,271 households. Compare that to the 8,103 homes that took in the Islanders game on FSNY, and the outrageous and embarrassing 736 that watched the Devils on MSG. Gary Bettman, we have a problem. Richard Sandomir of the New York Times examines the issue in depth today, so check it out.
