Chew On This: Birds Back On Trach

Mets Rumors & NewsYankees Rumors & News

Well that didn’t take long. With the news breaking yesterday that Orioles pitcher Kris Benson would be lost for the season with a torn rotator cuff, Baltimore moved quickly, replacing one former Met with another. The Birds have signed right-handed starter Steve Trachsel to a one-year, $3.1 million contract. Trachsel adds an appetite for leather, and a veteran presence to a young Orioles rotation that includes Erik Bedard, Daniel Cabrera, and Adam Loewen.

At a time when many Mets fans are fretting about their rotation, Trachsel’s signing should serve as a useful reminder that even this guy won 15 games for the Mets last season.

Mo’ Money, Mo’ Rivera

Yankees Rumors & News

Bigger mistake: Leaving Yanks or making this commercial?Perhaps upset over the treatment of Bernie Williams this offseason, Yankees closer Mariano Rivera was uncharacteristically antagonistic yesterday when discussing his own contract status. Rivera is due to earn $10.5 million this season and will become a free agent after the World Series if the Yankees don’t sign him to an extension before then. According to Mo, though he would like to finish his career in Yankees pinstripes, he would have no qualms about leaving the only major league franchise he has ever known if the Yankees “don’t give me the respect that I deserve.”

One thing is for certain, if Mo’s sentiments are genuine, the Yanks had better show him the money; because if they don’t, the Red Sox surely will.

Depending on how the 2007 season turns out, next winter could be one of upheaval for the Bronx Bombers. In addition to Rivera, catcher Jorge Posada will also be a free agent, and third baseman Alex Rodriguez has an option …

It’s Reese’s Ship Now

Giants Rumors & News

The local papers have complete coverage of Giants GM Jerry Reese’s first offseason salvo. As Gary Myers of the New York Daily News says, “Reese didn’t need much time to start discarding the broken-down team Ernie Accorsi left behind.” While Accorsi has always been well respected, there is no refuting the mess he’s left in the wake of his retirement. His decision to build around QB Eli Manning has thus far been ill-fated, and the veteran players with which he’s filled the roster have broken down with significant injuries for four straight seasons.

Of the three players cut yesterday, LaVar Arrington is the biggest headline-maker, due to his boisterous persona, Pro Bowl resume, and huge free agent contract. However in reality, the biggest move here is the release of starting left tackle Luke Petitgout. Petitgout was drafted by Accorsi in the first round in 1999 and had played his entire career for the Giants. Though Petitgout was due to make a hefty $5 million this upcoming season, …

Giant Shake-Up

Giants Rumors & News

The New York Giants have cut linebacker LaVar Arrington, as well as linebacker Carlos Emmons and offensive tackle Luke Petitgout, all of whom missed significant time due to injuries last season. The moves are somewhat unexpected, and could be considered a major shake-up by new general manager Jerry Reese.

It was only last offseason that Arrington signed a 7-year, $49 million contract with the Giants, however the former Pro Bowler appeared in just six games after injuring his Achilles.

By releasing the three veterans, the Giants have cleared significant cap space. Fans can expect the Giants to be big players in free agency this offseason.

Benson Out For ’07

Mets Rumors & NewsYankees Rumors & News is reporting that former Met Kris Benson will miss the entire 2007 season with a partially torn rotator cuff. Benson compiled an 11-12 record with the Orioles in 2006, his first season in Baltimore after being traded from the Mets for pitchers John Maine and Jorge Julio (later swapped for Orlando Hernandez).
