The Jets and Giants can scratch one premier free agent off their to-do list, as the Patriots have put the franchise tag on cornerback Asante Samuel, preventing him from hitting the free agent market.

Samuel became the third player to receive the franchise tag. He was given a one-year tender at $7.79 million. For a team to try to sign him, they have to be willing to give up two first-round draft choices and then have to wait seven days after reaching agreement to see if the Patriots will match.

In a development that sucks the juice right out of next winter’s offseason, the Chicago Tribune is reporting that Carlos Zambrano is close to signing a five-year deal with the Cubs.

Yesterday, Zambrano backed away from his earlier comments in the third-person that he would leave Chicago if a deal was not worked out by Opening Day. He insisted that somehow his words were misinterpreted when he stated: “”I want to sign with the Cubs before the season starts. If they don’t sign me, sorry, but I must go. That’s what Carlos Zambrano thinks.”

Zambrano is set for an arbitration hearing on Tuesday where he’ll seek a salary for the 2007 season of around $15.5 million. The Cubs are offering $11.025 million.

However, if the report in the Tribune is accurate, the arbitration hearing could be moot. According to the report, the Cubs are in fact denying that they have given Big Z a concrete offer, while Zambrano is telling anyone who’ll listen that he’s close to signing a …
