Shanahan Badly Injured, Leaves On Stretcher

Thanks to the Journal News’ Sam Weinman and his blog, Rangers Report:

Brendan Shanahan is awake, alert and moving all his extremities at St. Vincent’s Hospital. He has no recollection of the collision with Mike Knuble, but there is no word yet on whether he sustained a concussion. The only reference to how long the right wing might be out was Tom Renney saying he hopes it’s not long.

UPDATE: Shanahan will be kept overnight for observations but X-rays and CAT scans were clear.

Brendan Shanahan was taken off the ice on a stretcher Saturday after a hard collision with Philadelphia’s Mike Knuble left the New York Rangers forward unconscious on his back for several minutes.

Shanahan skated toward the bench as Knuble came the other way. Neither player saw the other and they slammed shoulder-to-shoulder. Shanahan went flying backward and struck his head against the ice when he fell.

He moved his left leg slightly as medical personnel attended to him but his eyes remained close. Shanahan, 38, appeared …
