Mark It Down: A-Rod Will Join Mets

I kid, I kid. I still think A-Rod winds up in Chicago after this season unless the Yankees win a World Championship, or the Cubs run out of money. However, should A-Rod indeed opt out of his deal, and were a bidding war to ensue, David Wright is throwing the Mets’ hat into the ring, saying, “a guy like that makes a team completely better from the get-go.” Via the Daily News:

Alex Rodriguez had to switch positions to become a Yankee because of Derek Jeter’s presence at shortstop. But the matinee-idol star on the other side of town would be willing to make a similar move on the minuscule chance A-Rod lands in Flushing next season.

If Rodriguez exercises his right to opt out of his mega-contract after 2007, David Wright said he’d “absolutely” vacate third base and switch to the outfield or second base if the Mets decide to pursue A-Rod as a free agent.

Pitching performances of note abound this morning as Mike Pelfrey, Jason Vargas, John Maine, Philip Humber, Andy Pettitte, and Carl Pavano all saw action over the weekend.

Pelfrey and Vargas combined for four shutout innings in the Mets’ 5-2 loss to the Dodgers on Saturday. Vargas recorded two strike outs in his two innings of work, while Anthony De Rosa at Hot Foot tells us that Pelfrey’s sinker was very impressive.

The Mets got a brief scare on Sunday when John Maine was hit by a comebacker on the right shin. It is becoming increasingly obvious that Maine’s fortunes will be critical to the success of the Mets’ rotation this season. Maine went on to toss two scoreless innings, throwing just 18 pitches – 14 for strikes – and according to the Post’s Joel Sherman, he’s looking to incorporate a changeup with the aid of his off-speed guru Tom Glavine.
