On Thursday we took a closer look at Mets pitcher Mike Pelfrey. While Pelfrey has certainly pitched well enough to earn the 5th spot in the Mets rotation, there is a question of whether the organization would rather see him refine his secondary stuff while pitching at AAA New Orleans or while pitching in the National League East.

Earlier in the week we had opined that Jason Vargas could prove an appealing option should the team decide to start Pelfrey in the minors, but the Mets clearly have other plans, optioning Vargas to AAA along with Phil Humber on Thursday. The Mets forecast Humber as a “viable contributor” at some point during the ’07 season, however he’d been overthrowing the ball all spring, compiling a 16.00 ERA over three innings. Vargas on the other hand had pitched well, allowing three runs and seven hits through eight innings of work for a 2.25 ERA. According to the Journal News, Vargas left the clubhouse without talking …
