Amazin’ Opener for Mets

Mets Rumors & News

Via The Daily News’ John Harper:

For anyone who remembers 1986, it was hard not to think how history might repeat itself. Losing out to the Cardinals in 1985, back when both teams were in the NL East, was a bitter pill that propelled the ’86 Mets to a championship.

“That made us hungrier than ever,” recalled Darryl Strawberry, here for last night’s game. “I think it will have the same effect for these guys.”

That remains to be seen. Falling short gave the ’86 Mets all the reason they needed to play with a chip on their shoulder, and they set the tone that April with a four-game sweep of the Cardinals here in St. Louis.

A three-game sweep here this week could set a similar tone.

In the end, banner night for Mets
