Mets 10, Cards 2 | Amazin’s Eye Sweep Tonight

Mets Rumors & News

On Monday, The Daily News’ John Harper drew a parallel between the ’07 Mets and the ’86 Mets, explaining that it was the bitter taste of losing the division to the Cardinals in ’85 that motivated the ’86 team from opening day on through October. Said Harper: “Falling short gave the ’86 Mets all the reason they needed to play with a chip on their shoulder, and they set the tone that April with a four-game sweep of the Cardinals here in St. Louis.” Harper opined that a three-game sweep of the defending champs this week could set a similar tone for the 2007 Mets. Evidently the team brought their brooms to St. Looie.

Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez was all the Mets needed on Tuesday night, driving in more runs than he allowed in the Mets’ 4-1 win. Hernandez was tagged for just 1 run through seven innings, and went 2-3 at the plate, including a bases loaded, 2 out, 2-run double in the sixth.

Isles Spoil Blueshirts’ Clincher, HSNY Eats Crow

Islanders Rumors & NewsRangers Rumors & News

We should’ve listened to Steve Zipay. The Rangers found it not merely difficult to clinch a playoff berth against the rival Islanders last night, but impossible. While they gained a point in the standings thereby inching closer to officially clinching, they were denied a shootout victory that would’ve propelled the team into the playoffs, and the Isles into oblivion.

Instead it was the Islanders who stole the day, as third-string goalie Wade Dubielewicz followed up his 42-save effort on Saturday with 36 saves against the Blueshirts in regulation and overtime, and 3 more in the deciding shootout in which he stoned Rangers Michael Nylander, Brendan Shanahan, and Jaromir Jagr.

NBA Throws Book At Zeke

Knicks Rumors & News

This morning’s local papers were abuzz with speculation surrounding what penalty Knicks coach Isiah Thomas would face for questioning the treatment and respect that Stephon Marbury has received this season from NBA referees. Well the NBA has come down with its penalty, and it’s pretty steep.

Zeke has been fined $50,000 by the NBA, a league that does not tolerate internal criticism of their officials. In stark contrast, earlier in this NHL season, Rangers veteran Brendan Shanahan accused NHL referees of holding an ethnic prejudice against Rangers captain Jaromir Jagr. Shanahan was not disciplined for his comments.

Rangers Will Clinch Tonight

Islanders Rumors & NewsRangers Rumors & News

Sorry Islanders fans, that’s just the way I see it. Newsday’s Steve Zipay cautions that clinching a playoff berth on the Island tonight won’t be easy for the Blueshirts, and Newsday’s Greg Logan predicts an old-time hockey game tonight with plenty of fireworks. Translation: There could be some fightin.’

Nevertheless, I don’t think the Rangers will mess around tonight. As Logan points out, long gone are the “You can’t beat us” chants that Isles fans relished during their four-game winning streak over their bitter rivals. Wade Dubielewicz will likely be in between the pipes for the home team after saving 42 of 46 shots in a 5-2 loss on Saturday, as franchise goalie Rick DiPietro continues to suffer from post-concussion symptoms. The team is 5-7-4 since the blockbuster acquisition of Ryan Smyth, and 3-7-2 since captain Alexei Yashin returned to the lineup. They were 8-2-4 in his absense.

The Rangers meanwhile are 12-2-3 since February 27th, and 7-1 in their last …
