Surgery For Yanks’ Sanchez

Yankees Rumors & News

Yankees pitching prospect Humberto Sanchez has undergone Tommy John surgery on his right elbow and will miss at least a year. At the start of spring training, Sanchez’s overpowering stuff was drawing raves from team mates. Said Jason Giambi of the big right-hander:

He’s huge. I don’t know how you let a guy like that go. I guess when you throw 96, it’s not enough to make that ballclub. In Detroit, every player throws 100.

Sanchez, along with prospects Kevin Whelan and Anthony Claggett, were acquired from Detroit during the offseason in exchange for Gary Sheffield. Surprisingly, according to The Post, GM Brian Cashman was aware that Sanchez could potentially need surgery on his elbow at the time of the deal, but said “we looked at it long term and in 12 months we will have him back.” Perhaps Giambi now knows why the Tigers let ‘Bert go after all.

Sun Is Shining At Shea Today For Jackie

Mets Rumors & News

Tonight the Mets will honor Jackie Robinson at Shea Stadium. Jackie Robinson Day was originally to be commemorated last Sunday, but a rainout pushed the celebration back.

Manager Willie Randolph will be the lone Met wearing Robinson’s No. 42 in tribute tonight, though several Mets had expressed an interest in doing so. Team ownership prefers that Randolph alone bear the honor. Said Mets COO Jeff Wilpon, as quoted in The New York Post:

“As you know, there was no shortage of interest among our players and coaches to wear No. 42 for our celebration of the life of Jackie Robinson,” Wilpon said. “We believe that Willie – as a person and leader, as a New Yorker and Brooklynite, as a family man – embodies Jackie’s nine ideals wonderfully articulated by his daughter, Sharon. Willie has a personal connection to [his wife] Rachel Robinson and the Robinson family. For those reasons we felt the singular focus of Willie wearing 42 would best represent the entire Mets organization in most appropriately honoring …

Via The Daily News’ Anthony McCarron:

[Alex] Rodriguez is clicking. He is tied with Albert Pujols and Chris Shelton as the fourth-fastest to reach nine homers – Pujols and Shelton did it last year. Only Mike Schmidt (10 games in 1976), Luis Gonzalez (10 games in 2001) and Larry Walker (12 games in 1997) have reached nine faster.

Rodriguez, who is batting .365 with a .981 slugging percentage and 23 RBI, has an extra-base hit in every game but one and he and the Mets’ David Wright are the only players with hits in each game this year.

They seem to be grinning at about the same rate, too. Rodriguez said he hasn’t smiled this much, “probably since my daughter was born” and added that even when he makes an out, “I know exactly what to do to fix it.”

“He’s unbelievable,” [Derek] Jeter said. “Everything he hits is a home run. He hit one out with one hand. I can’t relate to it because I can’t do it. He’s as hot as I’ve seen …
