Pinstripe PAN!C

Yankees Rumors & News

Via The New York Times’ Murray Chass:

It appeared that [the Yankees] were prepared to be patient and ride out the injuries that will have two starting pitchers on the disabled list, down from four last week, even after Chien-Ming Wang pitches tonight. But yesterday, they scheduled Phil Hughes, their No. 1 pitching prospect, to pitch Thursday night against Toronto at Yankee Stadium….If it is a panic move, it may be one of several. The first? [Manager Joe] Torre’s decision to bring [Mariano] Rivera into the Boston game Friday night with one out in the eighth inning.

Torre had said in spring training that he would restrict Rivera to three-out saves. But to stick to that plan, Torre has to trust his other relievers. He has long shown a lack of trust in them (he has used [starter Andy] Pettitte twice in relief this season), and he did again in that instance. Incredibly, the calm, cool Torre panicked in the 15th game of the season.

Mr. April!

Yankees Rumors & News

Alex Rodriguez belted two more homers last night, tying Albert Pujols’ record of 14 for the month of April. He is the only player in the majors who has hit safely in every game this season, and the only player in history to homer 13 or more times in the season’s first 18 games. A-Rod has six games remaining in April to shatter both Pujols’ record, and his own personal best for a single month (he hit 15 in August ’03). His 34 RBIs in April already makes this month the most productive of his career.

Hill Gets 20-Game Ban

Islanders Rumors & News

As everyone knows by now, the season is over for the New York Islanders. However, we would be remiss not to mention the news that broke prior to Friday’s deciding Game 5.

Isles’ defenseman Sean Hill has become the first NHL player suspended under the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy. News of the violation reached the Islanders early Friday morning, forcing the team to dress rookie defenseman Drew Fata in his place. Fata saw the Sabres light the lamp twice during his brief six minutes of ice time. He was not used in the third.

Meanwhile, Hill’s future is up in the air. The veteran was hit with a 20-game ban, 19 games of which will carry into next season. He is an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
