Quinn Is Slip Sliding

Many observers thought Brady Quinn would be snatched up at No. 3, in large part due to the close relationship between former Pats coordinators Romeo Crennel (head coach of the Browns) and Charlie Weis (head coach at Notre Dame), not to mention Cleveland’s glaring need at quarterback. When the Browns instead used the No. 3 pick on Wisconsin OT Joe Thomas, Quinn proceeded to slip down the board all the way to No. 9, where it was widely assumed the Miami Dolphins would happily snatch him up. Instead the Fish shockingly and bizarrely have selected Ohio St WR Ted Ginn Jr.

It now appears as if Quinn will only continue to slip. The Texans, at No. 10, recently addressed the quarterback position by acquiring Atlanta’s Matt Schaub. San Francisco and Buffalo have already invested in young QBs Alex Smith and J.P. Losman respectively. Quinn will thus most likely drop to the St. Louis Rams at No. 13 at the very least, and could tumble all the way to Kansas City …

JaMarcus Russell Goes No. 1

The Raiders have used the No. 1 overall pick in today’s NFL Draft on LSU QB JaMarcus Russell. Georgia Tech WR Calvin Johnson was selected No. 2 by the Detroit Lions.

The Giants hold the No. 20 selection, while the Jets will pick at No. 25.

Head over to Daily News reporter Rich Cimini’s blog for his complete Jets’ draft preview. He breaks downs the Jets’ needs unit by unit, and takes a look at the top prospects at each position.

Cimini also put together a mock draft in which he has the Jets trading down to Chicago’s No. 31 spot and picking Auburn guard Ben Grubbs, and the Giants using their No. 20 pick on Texas CB Aaron Ross.

Speaking of Ross, Dave Hutchinson profiles the cornerback in today’s Star-Ledger, describing him as “talented, tough, smart, loves football and has a squeaky-clean reputation.” However, Hutchinson’s remarks are written in the context of Ross as a fit for the New York Jets. While Hutchinson states that the Giants may be interested in Ross, he reports that the team has not met with him face-to-face.

Nevertheless, not only does Rich Cimini foresee Ross going to the Giants, but Daily News reporter Ralph Vacchiano likewise sees Big Blue …
