The Boss Speaks

Yankees Rumors & News

Via ESPN.com:

“The season is still very young, but up to now the results are clearly not acceptable to me or to Yankee fans,” [Yankees owner George] Steinbrenner said in a statement. “However, Brian Cashman, our general manager, Joe Torre, our manager, and our players all believe that they will turn this around quickly.

“I believe in them. I am here to support them in any way to help them accomplish this turnaround. It is time to put excuses and talk away. It is time to see if people are ready to step up and accept their responsibilities. It is time for all of them to show me and the fans what they are made of.

“Let’s get going. Let’s go out and win and bring a world championship back to New York. That’s what I want.”

Brian, Not Joe Should Face the Heat

Yankees Rumors & News

Joe Torre’s Yankees have underachieved, choked, and generally failed to show up in the postseason for several years now. Naturally the manager has to take his share of blame for these short-comings, and if fans want to hold his feet to the fire for it, I can’t blame them.

What I don’t understand is how anyone in their right mind can blame Joe Torre for the Yankees’ struggles this April. Just over a week ago, Newsday’s back page shouted “Look Out, Boston!” Ten days later, the sky is falling. A quick look at the Yankees Headlines today reveals a plethora of stories surrounding the fate of Torre, who apparently is very nearly on the chopping block.

To hear some fans and pundits tell it, it was Torre who invested $46 million in Kei Igawa to be a long-man in the bullpen. It was Torre who – apparently concerned about the gilded gloves on the left side of the infield and their ability to get the …

DL For Duque

Mets Rumors & News

According to WFAN, Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez has been diagnosed with shoulder bursitis and is headed to the DL.

Chan Ho Park has been recalled from AAA-New Orleans and will get the start tonight against the Marlins. Park is 3-1 for the Zephyrs this season, but has compiled a bloated 7.29 ERA along the way.

Karstens Is Clubhouse Hero | Pavano, Not So Much

Yankees Rumors & News

Via The Post’s George King:

Jeff Karstens scored big points in the clubhouse for trying to pitch with a fractured fibula Saturday in order to pick up a few innings for the tired bullpen. The fact that Karstens was willing to help with a broken leg and [Calamity Carl] Pavano has pitched 19 games in two-plus seasons wasn’t lost on the uniforms.

Mets’ Duque, Valentin Are Hurting

Mets Rumors & News

Via Newsday’s David Lennon:

While the Mets were waiting for the results of the MRI of Jose Valentin’s right knee, Orlando Hernandez showed up at RFK Stadium yesterday morning and complained of stiffness in his right shoulder….As for possible replacements, the Mets could call up Chan Ho Park, who would be on turn after starting Wednesday for Triple-A New Orleans.

Performance-wise, the best option is Jorge Sosa (3-0, 1.38 ERA), but he pitched yesterday for the Zephyrs against Oklahoma. They also could consider Aaron Sele, who pitched 1 1/3 innings Saturday night, or move up Mike Pelfrey from tomorrow’s start.

As for Valentin, Minaya said the second baseman is expected to have more tests today before they can determine his status. Valentin left Saturday’s game in the fourth inning after feeling his knee “wobble” while he was standing at his position, and he had an MRI yesterday. He said Saturday that doctors were unsure if this is an old or new condition. Valentin missed three months of the 2005 season with three sprained …
