While Tuesday night’s Yankees game in Chicago versus the White Sox was postponed due to rain, the lineup that Joe Torre had planned against Sox lefty John Danks was pretty interesting.

Offensively anemic Robinson Cano would have sat this one out with infielder Miguel Cairo starting at second base. Equally inept at the plate, Bobby Abreu was to hit seventh – behind Josh Phelps in the order.

For a guy known as a player’s manager, Torre can be pretty insensitive to the egos on his team (i.e. batting A-Rod eighth). Resting Cano against a tough lefty would be an understandable maneuver, but sitting him against a tomato can like Danks is a little curious. Even more unsettling is the idea of a veteran hitter like Abreu protecting Phelps of all people.
