According to the New York Post’s George King, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim were entertaining the notion of taking Jason Giambi off the Bombers’ hands prior to his recent controversial remarks concerning steroids. Despite leading the AL West, the Angels sit last in the AL in home runs and could sorely use another thumper in the lineup.
The Yanks wouldn’t mind ridding themselves of the Sultan of Shot, now more than ever, however any discussions with the Angel are most likely on hold until Major League Baseball concludes its investigation of Giambi’s admission of using “that stuff.” The Yankees are hopeful that MLB’s findings would allow them to void the remaining year on Giambi’s bloated $120 million deal, however that likelihood is extremely remote.
King suggests that Angel’s utility man Chone Figgins and backup catcher Jose Molina could be the players coming back to New York, though it’s unclear if that’s the legitimate buzz or simply King’s conjecture. While not the flashiest of names, acquiring Figgins and Molina would fill two huge holes on the Yankee bench. Miguel Cairo and Wil Nieves have given Joe Torre zero reason to pencil them in the lineup on anything more than an emergency-basis. Adding two serviceable bench players would allow the manager the luxury of resting his everyday players with more regularity. Trading Giambi would also open the DH spot for some of the aging legs in the outfield, providing more time for Melky Cabrera.
