Injury Update: Beltran, Wright Out

Mets Rumors & News

As expected, Carlos Beltran will be out of the lineup for the Mets tonight as they take on the Arizona Diamondbacks. An MRI on Beltran’s right knee revealed nothing worse than a bruise, so you can expect the outfielder to be back sometime this weekend.

Not quite as expected is the news that David Wright will also be out of the lineup tonight. David is suffering from back spasms. Julio Franco will play third base.

Scout: Yanks, Abreu Are Garbage

Yankees Rumors & News

Man, the Yankees could use a win tonight. How’s that for the understatement of the day?

The negative press surrounding the team today is truly staggering. The latest? Mark Feinsand of the Daily News talks to an anonymous big-league scout who basically says the Bombers should pack up the tent. The scout – let’s call him Javier – touched on a variety of Yankee weaknesses, including a weak bench, average pitching, and a pathetic Bobby Abreu.

Javier on the Yankee bench:

“The bench is terrible. That’s not a Yankee bench. They used to bring guys off the bench that could play, guys you’d take on your team in a minute. I wouldn’t take any one of those guys.”

On the Yankee farm system:

On the rotation:

“Pettitte knows how to pitch, but if you’re going to lean on him, forget about it. As the season goes on, his age will show a …

Daily News

Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein has followed the travails of his team’s rival and his counterpart, Brian Cashman. The guy on a big roll is feeling for the guy who’s “on a big hook,” as George Steinbrenner deftly put it.

“Cash and the Yankees are going through what we went through last August – it’s no fun,” Epstein said. “When injuries and circumstances come together and give you short-term bad results, it creates a lot of distractions. You have to feel sympathy for someone in his position.”

Pedro Nears Return to the Mound

Mets Rumors & News

Mark Hale of the New York Post reports that Pedro Martinez is ready for a potentially enormous step in his rehabilitation from rotator cuff surgery. Pedro is scheduled for a bullpen session on Tuesday, marking the first time the pitcher has thrown off a mound since shutting it down last season.

Pedro is still on target for an August return.
