Green Returns; Johnson Optioned

As expected, outfielder Ben Johnson has been optioned to AAA-New Orleans in order to clear room on the roster for Shawn Green, who will likely be activated and return to right field tonight in Los Angeles. Green has been out since May 26th with a broken right foot.

It appears 21-year-old Carlos Gomez will remain with the club at least until Endy Chavez returns from his stint on the DL with a strained hamstring.

Moises Alou meanwhile is being examined by doctors in New York today before heading to Port St. Lucie to continue his rehab from a strained left quad – a nagging and frustrating injury that has sidelined the outfielder since May 13th.

Failing to Tame the Tigers

(AP Photo/Paul Sancya)The weekend could have been better for the Mets, dropping 2 of 3 to the Detroit Tigers.  The series started off well with a 3-0 victory, as Jorge Sosa dominated the potent Tigers offense.  Carlos Delgado led the scoring with a two-run home run in the 7th off Tigers starter Chad Durbin.  Billy Wagner rebounded from a blown save on Thursday to throw a perfect 9th for his 14th save of the season.

Saturday Detroit fired back, lighting up Oliver Perez for 5 runs in 5 innings; beating the Mets 8-7.  Guillermo Mota, relieved Perez, and continued his ineffectiveness since returning from a fifty game suspension, allowing 3 runs in one-third of an inning.  The Mets had Tigers starter Jeremy Bonderman on the ropes to open the 7th.  He allowed 3 consecutive hits before being replaced by Yorman Bazardo, who allowed a hit and a pop out before turning the ball over to Wil Ledezma.  Ledezma allowed a hit and a walk before finishing out the …
