After three strong starts for the Scranton-Wilkes Barre Yankees, Kei Igawa will be called up by the Yankees. Igawa went 2-1 with a 1.80 ERA for Scranton, striking out 21 in 20 innings. This appears to be a turnaround for the Japanese import that many already consider a bust.
Igawa started the season in the Bronx and was unimpressive posting a 2-1 record with a 7.63 ERA. Igawa had no command of the strike zone, and often looked lost on the mound. On May 7th, the Yankees optioned him to Class A Tampa to work on his mechanics with pitching guru Billy Connors.
While Yankee manager, Joe Torre, didn’t mention Igawa specifically, he did give this quote:
“We probably will (make a move) and you can all guess who it’s going to be,” he said. “That pitcher is not going to pitch Tuesday when he’s scheduled.”
Igawa is scheduled to pitch tomorrow for Scranton. Look for Igawa to make his return Friday at AT&T Park against the San Francisco Giants.

Igawa in my opinion is a talented pitcher, though we all know how harsh and impatient yankee fans can be. With that said after Igawa was banished to the bullpen before being demoted. He came on during a game the yankees needed against the Red Sox and pitched lights out for six innings getting his change up over for strikes which he previously could not do. Igawa couldnt keep it up and then was sent down. I believe Igawa will be much better this time around because he has the talent and a great offense behind him. If he falters he could be another victim of the
” Cant handle the New York pressure” Theory which is a theory that I do not subscribe to because thats a cop out/B.S.
