Last night the Mets looked absolutely terrible, committing four errors in a 9-0 loss to the Minnesota Twins. Johan Santana reminded the fans in Flushing why he is considered the best pitcher in baseball, going the distance while allowing only four hits.

The Mets are now 4-13 in the month of June. They are struggling to find any consistency, and their play is getting worse. Flip Bondy of the Daily News suggests maybe the focus needs to be a little less on Jose Reyes and more on gaining confidence back. Via the Daily News:

The Mets have now dropped 12 of their last 15 games. They are looking way too hard for Jose Reyes to steal every game for them and waiting too anxiously for the mythical return of Pedro Martinez. Meanwhile, there are more signs every day of gaping holes in the club’s confidence.

The team may now require a therapist, in addition to another starter. The Mets went 12 games earlier this season without an error. They committed four of them last night, yielding three unearned runs. In the decisive second inning, Carlos Beltran threw the ball into the photo stand behind third base, and starter Jorge Sosa extended the nightmare by walking Santana in the pitcher’s first plate appearance of the season.

Forget the erratic pitching and the puzzling slumps in the middle of the order. The Mets simply are not playing well or smart enough right now to earn victories against good teams.

Jose Reyes is one of the best players in the game and serves as the team’s lightning rod, but if the players around him can’t find their focus and aren’t taking the lead role when needed, the pattern of losing will continue.
