It’s safe to say Carlos Delgado has had a disappointing season. The two-time All-Star is currently hitting .223 with 11 home runs and 41 RBIs. This is a far cry from the player who’s averaged 38 home runs and 121 RBIs while hitting .280 over his 15 year career.

Delgado has recently been working hard trying to get out of this hitting slump, putting extra time in the cage to work on some mechanics and find some consistency.

“There is a saying: ‘Swing until you get stupid,” Delgado said, “and everything will come back to you.'”

Well whatever Delgado’s been doing, it doesn’t appear to be working, judging by his .192 batting average in the month of June. With a much needed off day today, one might assume that Delgado will be back in the cage swinging away. Wrong. Carlos has a new strategy: chores.

“I hit a little extra tonight,” said Delgado, who put in time in the batting cage after last night’s loss, “because I am not picking up a bat (today). I am going to be Super Daddy, an average Joe, do chores around the house, be with the family.”

When you’re in the kind of slump Delgado has been in, you’ll try anything. A day away from the game to clear your head might be in order. If Delgado finds a hot streak, don’t be surprised if he starts coming to the park with dishpan hands. Superstitions are one of the things that make baseball great.
