It’s absolutely incredible. Just when I thought we’d seen the last of Stray-Rod, Google is ablaze again with search queries for “cynthia rodriguez shirt,” “a rod s wife,” “alex rodriguez wife shirt,” and of course, “new york post.” There are even people digging around for “stray-rod’s bunny honey.” If there’s anything I’ve learned from this baseball season, it’s that the public can’t get enough smut, scandal, and swears.

In any event, as far as the latest “news” goes on this story, there isn’t any. A-Rod refused to discuss the incident, no one could get ahold of Cyn-Rod, and Yankees GM Brian Cashman would only confirm that he’d spoken to the happy couple concerning Mrs. Rodriguez’s violation of the Stadium’s “strict policy about vulgarity, either worn or displayed.” In his column today, Bill Madden imagines “how and why this latest A-Rod family tempest came down.” Via the Daily News:

Over breakfast, Cynthia says: “You know, Alex, it’s been almost a month since we were the center of attention in this town. We’ve been knocked off the front pages by Paris Hilton! The team is stinking out the place and needs another good distraction. That’s why I had this T-shirt made up, which I’m thinking about wearing to the game today. What do you think?”

“Go for it, baby.”

Oy. Madden also observes that it’s indicative of this Yankees season that on a night Roger Clemens was once again shooting for career win No. 350 – against a team that the Yanks are trailing in the wild card race no less – the media’s No. 1 priority prior to the game was to get the scoop on “T-shirt gate.” On that point, I couldn’t agree more.
