The Mets have placed rookie Carlos Gomez on the fifteen day disabled list with a fractured bone in his left hand. Gomez will require surgery and be out of at least six weeks. He joins a growing list of Mets on the DL which include Pedro Martinez, Moises Alou, Jorge Sosa, Duaner Sanchez, Endy Chavez, Oliver Perez, Dave Williams, and Lastings Milledge. David Newhan has been recalled from AAA New Orleans to take Gomez’s roster spot.

The pressure is on. Moises Alou needs to finally recover or Omar Minaya needs to make a move. A left field platoon of David Newhan and Ricky Ledee is not going to cut it until Alou decides his quad is all better. The Braves and Phillies aren’t going away. With the recent inconsistency in the pitching staff, and a lineup spot taken up by a fifth or sixth outfielder, matters can only get worse. It was understandable when Omar was happy using Gomez daily (and he was finally starting to respond), but it’s become a different situation. Moises or Omar, it’s time to step up.
