A Lastings Return

Mets Rumors & News

Outfielder Lastings Milledge will be recalled from AAA New Orleans and start in left field tonight against the Cincinnati Reds. Milledge has been sidelined most of the season with a sprained ligament in his right foot.

Milledge, the Mets top offensive prospect, has made more headlines this season for his annual trade rumors and his aspiring rap career than his five tools. In limited time last season, Milledge hit .241 with 4 home runs and 22 RBI in 166 at bats. While the average appears low, Milledge was a 21 year old rookie and he showed signs of what all the hype surrounding him is really about.

Milledge’s return couldn’t have come at a better time. With Carlos Gomez being placed on the disabled list shortly before the All-Star break, joining Endy Chavez, and the eternally injured Moises Alou, it’s pretty obvious there’s an outfield shortage in Flushing (does any Mets fan want to see David Newhan patrolling left field daily?). Milledge will assume the every day left …

Cullen Could Land Back in Carolina

Rangers Rumors & News

Via John Dellapina of the Daily News:

The Daily News also has learned that Sather is shopping center Matt Cullen, with a trade back to the Carolina Hurricanes very much on the front burner. Should the Rangers shed Cullen’s contract (three years left at $2.8million per), they’d trim nearly $3million from this season’s cap hit.

That could simply provide flexibility for potential in-season moves. But it just as easily could be the first step in a plan to clear enough cap space to sign free-agent defenseman Sheldon Souray, whom the Devils and Islanders have pursued. Unloading defenseman Paul Mara’s $3million salary undoubtedly would be another requirement

Yankees Try to Keep $30 Mil Man

Yankees Rumors & News

Yankees Try to Keep $30 Mil Man: “Well it turns out that when you go into the break hitting .317 with 30 homeruns and 86 RBI, that gets the Yankees to change their policy. So now the Yankees are trying to extend Alex and keep him from looking somewhere else for a bigger and longer contract. …

Mets Down Hitting Coach, Hire Rickey

Mets Rumors & News

UPDATE: After initial reports that Rickey Henderson would be taking over as hitting coach, followed by reports that Rickey could be at first with HoJo sliding into the role of hitting coach, it appears that Henderson will indeed take over Rick Down’s old job. The decision seems a little backwards to me, as Johnson had served as the hitting coach on the Norfolk Tides prior to joining Willie Randolph’s staff this season, whereas Henderson has never served as a full-time coach. As perhaps the greatest base stealer of all-time, Rickey would have seemed a natural fit at first base, but instead will attempt to impart his renown patience at the plate to an increasingly impatient Met lineup.

UPDATE 2: According to’s Marty Noble, while Rickey is taking over as hitting coach, HoJo is expected to assume “most or all of Down’s responsibilities.” Whatever that means.

In a startling move, the first-place Mets have shaken up their coaching staff, firing hitting coach Rick Down. Down had served as hitting …
