Let the Drama Begin…A-Gain

Yankees Rumors & News

Alex Rodriguez is making headlines again…both good and bad. On Wednesday the Yankees said they would like to negotiate with A-Rod concerning a new contract, however A-Rod’s agent Scott Boras wants no part of it. He wants to wait until the end of the year to start talking money. According to the NY Daily News, the Yanks are sending A-Rod and his agent a message: “sign an extension before opting out of your contract, or don’t sign with us at all.”

Various sources are indicating several interesting stances on this situation. Via ESPN.com:

MLB sources told ESPN The Magazine’s Buster Olney that the Yankees were willing to negotiate with Rodriguez — under the condition that he agrees not to opt out of his current contract after this season and that he agrees to tack on any extension to that deal, which expires after the 2010 season.

Meanwhile, when asked about his contract situation on Thursday, he said he has no plans to negotiate a deal during the season. Via …

Omar Shows He’s ‘The Boss’

Mets Rumors & News

While the Mets opened up the second-half with a 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds last night, the big story remains the roster and coaching shake-up that saw the departure of Julio Franco, the promotion of Lastings Milledge, the firing of hitting coach Rick Down, and the hiring of Rickey Henderson as a full-time coach. The situation is even more confusing than it sounds, as the Mets have yet to decide what role Rickey will assume once he joins the club today. He could slide into Down’s old job as hitting coach, or he could take first-base coach Howard Johnson’s spot while HoJo takes over as hitting coach.

For my money, it doesn’t make much sense to hand Down’s job to Rickey without any prior experience as a full-time coach. HoJo, meanwhile, served as a hitting coach in the minor leagues, where he helped prospects such as David Wright refine their swings at AAA Norfolk. Rickey would seem like a natural fit at first base, where he could further aid Jose …

Oilers and Souray Reach Deal: “Sheldon Souray the defenseman formally of the Montreal Canadians signed with the Edmonton Oilers today according to TSN of Canada. Terms were not yet disclosed. This is big news for New Yorkers as the two-time all-star was rumored to be going to all three local teams. The Rangers, who are near the salary cap, have been rumored to be attempting to free up space all week long in order to add Souray. As of this morning Carolina and New York newspapers have been reporting a move which would send Matt Cullen back to Carolina in order to free up space as a near done deal. It will be interesting to see if a move is made now that the Oilers have grabbed the point-man. In addition to rumors of the Rangers attempting to move Cullen …

Franco’s Exit Spells More Time for Castro, Alomar

Mets Rumors & News

While most assumed that the promotion of Lastings Milledge would coincide with Sandy Alomar Jr.’s return to AAA New Orleans, the organization surprisingly has designated Julio Franco for assignment instead. According to MLB.com’s Marty Noble, by retaining Alomar, the Mets will be able to find more pinch-hitting at-bats for Ramon Castro, whose status as the team’s lone backup catcher restricted his availability as a pinch-hitter. Alomar, meanwhile, will be looked upon to replace the veteran leadership of the departing Franco. According to Noble, Franco is happy about the move. Via MLB.com:

For weeks, Julio Franco had spoken privately of the need to find work elsewhere and the need to get enough at-bats to allow him to continue his career and reach his objective of playing at age 50. He was convinced remaining in what he considered a role more limited than he had anticipated would undermine his chances. He planned to ask for his release.

The Mets beat him to the punch……Franco was pleased Thursday afternoon, but a little …
