Delgado Finding His Stroke

Mets Rumors & News

Carlos Delgado’s bat has been a season long concern for the Mets. A career .281 hitter, Delgado has been pushing and pushing, not finding any results, finishing the first half with a .241 average. The All-Star break gave Delgado a much needed break, but the bigger break might have been when the Mets fired hitting coach Rick Downs, replacing him with Howard Johnson.

On July 11th, when Downs was replaced, Delgado was batting .243. After going two for four last night, Delgado has upped his average past the quarter mark to .251. In the seven games since Down’s departure, Delgado has gone 9 for 24 (.375). What has been more impressive is when he’s hitting the ball for an out he’s hitting the ball well and making good contact, only striking out twice. Delgado only has one home run over the past seven games, but that’s not too much of a concern. Once Delgado finds his swing and gets more comfortable at the plate the power will …

Proctor and Farnsworth on the Market

Yankees Rumors & News

Proctor and Farnsworth on the Market: “The Yankees won their 5th straight last night and moved 7 games back in the American League East and 6 games back in the AL wildcard.

With the Yankees recent charge they are looking at their options available for upgrading the team. The most glaring need is in the bullpen where Kyle Farnsworth, Scott Proctor, and Brian Bruney have all been erratic at best.

The new idea the organization has is to look to deal these relievers to upgrade the offense. They would then look to upgrade the bullpen from within by calling up Sean Henn and Chris Britton. There is also the possibility of adding Eric Gagne from the Texas Rangers to replace enigmatic Farnsworth as the setup man.

While the most glaring need this season on offense has been at first base, the that productivity Andy Phillips has been providing lately has made the position a little less significant. Last week the Yankees may have had a chance to pull the trigger …

Blueshirts’ Blueline Is Getting Crowded

Rangers Rumors & News

Yesterday’s trade of Matt Cullen back to his former team in Carolina seems to have raised more questions than it answered for the Rangers. Rumors that Cullen might be on the move initially surfaced several weeks ago when multiple sources were reporting that defenseman Sheldon Souray was waiting to sign a free agent contract in order to allow the Blueshirts time and leverage to clear some cap space. When Souray subsequently reached a deal with the Edmonton Oilers, it seemingly eliminated any dire need to clear salary.

Thus, it was extremely interesting to see the Rangers unload Cullen to the Hurricanes yesterday in exchange for 2008 third-round draft pick and “a pair of definite maybes,” as the Post’s Larry Brooks today refers to 27-year-old defenseman Andrew Hutchinson and 21-year-old center prospect Joe Barnes. Meanwhile, though the team’s top-six forwards are significantly stronger with Scott Gomez and Chris Drury in the fold, the team has weakened itself at the third-line pivot with the trade of Cullen. As Brooks states, “The …
