The Curtis Martin Way

With his impending retirement Curtis Martin should be celebrated for many reasons.

He’s the 4th all-time leading rusher and a five-time pro bowler. He is without a doubt one of the best Jets players in the franchise’s history. A gifted running back, he is one of the most unselfish players you will ever see. He never held out, never complained about playing time and even in the end, took less money to free up salary cap room. He was always gracious with the press, the fans and anyone who came into contact with him, while in uniform or not.

But more than anything he did on the field he should be applauded for what he did off the field. Countless charities owe him a debt of gratitude. Causes that most likely will continue to reap the rewards of his generosity well into retirement.

And better yet, Curtis Martin should be applauded for what he didn’t do off the field. In other words, he was never arrested ~ all while spending most of his career in …

Having returned to St. Lucie, Fla., Pedro Martinez threw his second simulated game yesterday and had no problems health-wise.

“Everything went well,” Omar Minaya said, adding that the Mets ace threw all his pitches.

Martinez threw three innings, tossing 50 pitches, the same as he did in his first simulated game July 3 (which was prior to a pre-planned hiatus). The Mets initially said Martinez, recovering from rotator-cuff surgery, would go further if he needed a second simulated game, but he stayed with the same length and pitch quantity.

As for the schedule now, Minaya said Martinez likely will throw a third simulated game.

“Just going to see how his body feels sometime at the end of the week, and the next step probably will be another simulation, and then we’ll probably go from there,” the GM said. “But there’s no plan. It’s pretty much how his body feels.”

Realistically Martinez could return anytime from the middle to the end of August. The concern is that Martinez is thirty-five years old and is …
