Last night the Mets finalized the deal that sent second baseman Luis Castillo to Flushing for two minor league players. The two-time all-star and three-time Gold Glove winner is due to make his debut tonight in Milwaukee. Castillo will bat second and give the Mets some extra speed at the top of the order, while strengthing the middle infield.

It appears the Mets aren’t done as they are still rumored to be one of the front runners for Athletics pitcher, Joe Blanton. Blanton, currently 8-7 with a 3.82 ERA, is a young arm the Mets could use to bolster the rotation. Before Mets fans get too excited, this is far from a done deal. Earlier reports had that Oakland wanted outfielder, Lasting Milledge in return for the pitcher, a piece Mets GM Omar Minaya was unwilling to part with; at least for a pitcher like Joe Blanton. The Dodgers have now moved to the forefront, and while A’s GM Billy Beane’s asking price is high, the Dodgers have a surplus of young outfield and pitching talent. If the Dodgers don’t bite, look for the price to drop and for the Mets to get right back in the hunt.
