Beltran – Player of the Week

Mets Rumors & News

Mets outfielder, Carlos Beltran was named Bank of America National League Player of the Week, for the week of August 13-19. Beltran led the Mets offense hitting .375 with 4 home runs and 10 RBI’s. Over that stretch the Mets went 5-1 increasing their lead in the NL East over the Phillies and Braves to five games.

Beltran beat out fellow Mets Moises Alou (.348, 2 HR, 7 RBI) and David Wright (.423, 4 2B, 5 RBI) for this honor. This is the fourth time in his Mets career and second time this season Beltran has been the player of the week. He was also named player of the week in June 5-11 and July 17-24, 2006 and April 16-22, 2007.

Since Alou’s return, the Mets offense is clicking on all cylinders, averaging six runs per game. This hot streak couldn’t happen at a better time. The Mets enter a big stretch over the next ten games. Three games each with the Padres and Dodgers at Shea Stadium, before …

Yanks Improved with Young Pen

Yankees Rumors & News

Yanks Improved with Young Pen: “Heading into the All-Star break the Yankees were in need of a serious winning stretch to keep their playoff hopes alive. Over the next 28 games they got that stretch going 20-8 by outslugging their opponents 214 to 138.

That outcome wasn’t exactly unlikely because the teams they faced were all sub-.500 teams and many considered the next 20 games against playoff contenders more important. This tougher schedule meant that they could not simply over power teams with their offense as they had been doing – they would need more.

Lately they are getting what they need in the form of a stronger more balanced bullpen. Their new advantage became apparent this weekend when the bomber pen threw 11 innings while striking out 14 and giving up only a single run.

It seems that the balance is working for them. In the past they almost exclusively ran out guys with high velocity fastballs and average breaking balls. Talented pitchers for sure, but the similar styles may have been exploited.

Mets Acquire Conine

Mets Rumors & News

Jeff Conine continues his quest for a third World Series ring. The Mets acquired the outfielder/first basemen from the Cincinnati Reds for two minor league players; shortstop Jose Castro and outfielder Sean Henry. Conine is no stranger to the NL East, already spending time with the Florida Marlins (where he collected two World Series rings), and the Philadelphia Phillies.

This is a good move for the Mets. Conine, a career .285 hitter, will give the Mets a playoff seasoned bat off the bench. Something the bench could sorely use, since it’s been depleted with Ramon Castro and most recently, Damon Easley on the disabled list.

Controlling your Destiny

Mets Rumors & News

This weekend, the Mets took back the National League’s best record, sweeping all three games against the Nationals and answered critics who have been saying that the team hasn’t been playing up to their potential. The Mets didn’t just win; they won by playing solid baseball. They took the lead early in all three games and never looked back. Tom Glavine and Orlando Hernandez dominated the Nationals and while Oliver Perez wasn’t exactly at the top of his game, he kept the Mets in the game and the bullpen closed the door. The bullpen regained some form and held the Nats to only two runs in seven and a third innings pitched.

While beating the Nationals isn’t entirely a feat worthy of a parade, what makes it important is how the Phillies and Braves weekend went about. In Atlanta, the Braves lost two of three to the NL’s best Arizona Diamondbacks. The Phillies, who have been fighting through inconsistency and injuries all season, completely unraveled in Pittsburgh, also losing two …
