Memo to Stephon Marbury: Stick to selling sneakers.

During an appearance in Albany, New York Wednesday to promote his popular and inexpensive ‘Starbury’ sneakers — which are a great thing — Marbury did something that wasn’t so great.

He defended Michael Vick, who has said through his attorneys that he will plead guilty to charges stemming from a federal dogfighting investigation.

“I think it’s tough,” Marbury said, according to Albany TV station Capital News 9. “I think, you know, we don’t say anything about people who shoot deer or shoot other animals. You know, from what I hear, dogfighting is a sport. It’s just behind closed doors.”

Say what? A sport? I’m sure the folks at PETA, the animal rights organization, just loved to hear that statement.

Oh, and I’m sure PETA would agree with Marbury’s characterization of Vick as a “good human being.”

Of course, it’s not the first time this off-season that the New York Knicks point guard has said some strange things. Oh, and how is it that Vick is a good human being and LeBron James is a clown?

Hey, Steph, here’s a little advice. Talk about sneakers, talk about the Knicks. When it comes to anything else, though, maybe it’s time to keep quiet.
