Chad Pennington started the game in perfect fashion with a 79 yard TD reception to Leon Washington. The Jets looked like a completely different team than the one that muddled through the Vikings game half asleep. That is until Mike Nugent’s extra point was blocked due to a bad snap and hold. The defense then gave up a big third down pass play that was called back on a penalty for picking. When the Jets got the ball back they went four and out including a sack of Pennington for a huge loss. The Giants then marched down the field only to miss a 40 yard field goal. So in the first five minutes of the game fans saw the good, the bad and some ugly.

It only got worse for the Jets.

Darrelle Revis started and had four tackles.

The Jets had 2 third down plays in the first quarter and Pennington was sacked on both.

Ben Graham had a booming 65 yard punt only to follow it with disappointing 35 and 31 yarders.

The Jets’ defense was on the field for over 11 minutes in the first quarter and bent but didn’t break, holding the Giants to two missed field goals.

Following the TD pass to open the game the Jets went three and out on their next five possessions, including a safety following an offensive holding penalty in the endzone during a punt.

So other than the game’s first pass the Jets’ starting offense looked horrible against the Giants’ starting defense. Absolutely horrible.

While the defense played better than the offense, had the Giants not missed two makeable field goals they would have scored on 4 out of 6 possessions following long drives.

It will be interesting to see if Mangini starts the first team offense in the second half. They certainly weren’t on the field long enough to get tired and certainly didn’t play well enough to get the rest of the night off. I know it’s only pre-season, but this is the pre-season game when you are supposed to look your best, and even though you would have thought it impossible to look worse than last week, the starting offense did just that.

Stay tuned………………
