Breaking Joba Rules Saves Day

Yankees Rumors & News

Breaking Joba Rules Saves Day: “On his 22nd birthday, Joba Chamberlain picked up his first career save as the Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-5 Sunday afternoon at Yankee stadium.
Behind a strong performance by Mike Mussina the bombers were able to reduce their magic number to clinch the wild-card to two games and put themselves 1 ½ games behind the Boston Red Sox for the American League East lead.
The Yankees played small ball on offense with 11 singles and nine walks and only one extra-base hit during the game.  Jose Molina had the only double as he went 3-4 with three RBI’s playing as the regular catcher Jorge Posada got the day off.
Toronto got on the board first in the top of the second inning when left-fielder Adam Lind got up with runners on second and third and doubled to left field to put the Jays up 2-0.  The next batter, Curtis Thigpen, singled to center which put his team up by three runs …

Pennington leads the Jets to a big win over the Fins

Jets Rumors & News

Sunday afternoon at the Meadowlands, Chad Pennington left no doubt about not only who the starting QB is, but who it should be.

On a day when the NY faithful celebrated the retirement of one of the grittiest players to wear green and white, Wayne Chrebet, Pennington spread the wealth to six receivers for 124 yards and two TD’s in leading the Jets to a 31-28 victory over the win-less Miami Dolphins. Statistics aside, Pennington looked like the gutsy leader-of-old who has guided the Jets to not only regular season wins, but playoff appearances.

Areas deserving praise and some with concerns…

Special Teams

Special teams is a tale of two teams. Offensively, despite losing Justin Miller for the season, the Jets are getting quality returns from both the kicking and punting units, including today’s 98-yard TD by Leon Washington.

Coverage on special teams is a different story. Mike Nugent’s first two kick-offs were for touch-backs. Maybe he has figured out that the Jets’ kick-off coverage is so bad that if he doesn’t kick it into the end zone, he ends up having to make …

Melk Man Delivers

Yankees Rumors & News

24 innings in 24 hours, 9 and a half hours of baseball and 1 step closer to October. That was the end result of yesterday’s 12-11 Yankees victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. For the second straight day, we got “free” baseball and Melky Cabrera had a chance to send the remaining crowd of 56,000 home happy. Unlike Friday night when he failed to get the game winning hit in the bottom of the 9th with the winning run only 90 feet away, the Melk man completed a long exhausting back and forth battle with a game winning single in the bottom of the 10th.

“He’s important to this lineup,” said Jorge Posada, who started the 10th with a ground-rule double. “He’s been slumping a little bit and he had a big hit. That tells you a lot about the kid.”

You could also say Melky won the game in the top half of the 10th as well. He contributed to an inning ending play at the …

Gomez and Drury Lose In Debut

Rangers Rumors & News

Gomez and Drury Lose In Debut: “New acquisitions Scott Gomez and Chris Drury made their debuts as New York Rangers when the team was beaten 5-0 by the Philadelphia Flyers Saturday night.

A rusty power play and some poor defense took the heat as Henrik Lundqvist allowed all five goals in his first game of the pre-season.

The first period started with a lot of action and special teams as seven different players on both teams were given penalties in the first 11 minutes. Not included in the penalties was Fedor Tyutin who pulled down Sami Kapanen for which he was awarded a penalty shot which was eventually denied by Lundqvist.

There was no score in the game until shortly after the penalty shot Sami Kapanen was involved in another play. This time he beat two Ranger defensemen including Michal Rozsival to score on Lundvist glove side to put the Flyers up 1-0 12:15 into the game.

From this point on it was pretty …
