Dear George,

Yankees Rumors & News

Dear George,

I’m writing to you on behalf of every non-Yankee fan in America (and probably most of the Yankees fans as well) . Your quote today stating that Joe Torre will not be brought back if your team does not win this series against the Indians is utterly ridiculous.

I could write about all the bad statistics that are completely out of his control ~ like the injuries, the errors, the strikeouts in key situations, and the walks given up to generate runs. The good statistics, like the fact that they led all of baseball in runs scored this year, were not always perfect, but certainly during his tenure, better than most.

I could also write about the things that are under his control ~ strategic moves, the mood in the clubhouse, handling his coaching staff, and the behavior, on and off the field, of his players. These stats were almost flawless during the Torre era.

As a non-Yankee fan I can honestly tell you that I’d be thrilled with 1/4 of the success that Torre has had in NY.

I’d take one …

Giants Rumors & NewsJets Rumors & News

The Jets came home to the Meadowlands and donned the white uniforms for their 3rd away game of the season, hoping to secure a victory and takeoff in the right direction at this critical junction of the season.

The Giants, meanwhile, brought a two-game winning streak into the Meadowlands. They had given up just 3 points in the last 6 quarters and were coming off an NFL record-tying, 12-sack performance against the Eagles last week.

It was Chad vs Eli, captain vs captain, #10 vs #10. A quarterback constantly fighting the critics vs a QB fighting his family name.

The game went back and forth, with the Jets ahead by ten points at two different times during the game, but never putting the Giants away. The Giants took their first lead of the game with 8:07 remaining in the 4th quarter and never looked back.

The game started as if it was going to be what it was, a back and forth battle that would come down to which team wouldn’t make the critical mistake in the end to cost their team the game.

The …

Mets Rumors & News

On Friday, Rotoworld‘s Matthew Pouliot took an early crack at projecting the 2008 rosters in the National League. Intriguingly, when breaking down the Mets, Pouliot brings up a name that the average baseball fan has never heard of – that of 30-year-old Japanese outfielder Kosuke Fukudome. His friends call him “Dome”. No lie. Via Rotoworld:

Lastings Milledge is ready to start, but the Mets may decide to sign another veteran, as they know they’ll be lucky to get 110-120 games from Alou, Kosuke Fukudome is the best right-field option out there, and if the Mets have a chance to land him on a three-year deal, they shouldn’t hesitate.

Fukudome is an unrestricted free agent, and thus would not need to go through the infamous posting system. According to info on the ArmchairGM, the Red Sox, Rangers, Mariners, and Giants are all rumored to be interested in “Dome”, who could command a five year deal worth as much as $10-12 million annually.

Among Pouliot’s …

Yankees Rumors & News

George Steinbrenner is back! And that is bad news for Joe Torre.

It’s been a long time since Steinbrenner, 77, acted like the bullying, belligerent, brash New York Yankees owner of his younger days.

In an interview with The Record’s Ian O’Connor Saturday, though, Steinbrenner showed he’s still got it. If the Yankees don’t rally to beat the Cleveland Indians, King George told O’Connor Torre won’t be back.

“His job is on the line,” the Yankees’ owner said in a phone interview. “I think we’re paying him a lot of money. He’s the highest-paid manager in baseball, so I don’t think we’d take him back if we don’t win this series.”

This was classic Steinbrenner. Choosing one reporter he apparently has a good relationship with to deliver his message. Throughout his years with the Yankees, that has been a classic Steinbrenner ploy.

Steinbrenner also debunked any thoughts that he doesn’t make decisions about the team any longer.

“I have full control,” Steinbrenner said. “I’m doing all right. I’m fine.”

While he was at it, Steinbrenner ripped umpire …

Yankees Rumors & News

Dear NY Yankees,

I am writing to you because I feel I need to remind you guys who of you are. You are the NY Yankees, the greatest franchise in sports. Nothing will ever take that away, but if you keep losing then what makes you so different from everyone else? I wear my Yankee gear all year round proudly, but why do you feel the need to torture me in the month of October? I am there for every pitch, yet I feel you’re not. You’re there in body, but I wonder if sometimes in mind, if you’re there.

I have spent the last 8 and a half months waiting for this time of the year. The time of the year when you guys are suppose to seperate yourself from the rest. I have seen all the good (’96,’98-2000) and all the bad ( ’97, ’01-present) and now, the bad moments are starting to outweigh the good. I’m a little worried.

Derek, you’re suppose to be superman. You are the man I turn to …
