Dear George,
I’m writing to you on behalf of every non-Yankee fan in America (and probably most of the Yankees fans as well) . Your quote today stating that Joe Torre will not be brought back if your team does not win this series against the Indians is utterly ridiculous.
I could write about all the bad statistics that are completely out of his control ~ like the injuries, the errors, the strikeouts in key situations, and the walks given up to generate runs. The good statistics, like the fact that they led all of baseball in runs scored this year, were not always perfect, but certainly during his tenure, better than most.
I could also write about the things that are under his control ~ strategic moves, the mood in the clubhouse, handling his coaching staff, and the behavior, on and off the field, of his players. These stats were almost flawless during the Torre era.
As a non-Yankee fan I can honestly tell you that I’d be thrilled with 1/4 of the success that Torre has had in NY.
I’d take one of the four world championships. I’d take a pennant every fourth year (hell, I’d take one a decade).
Your declaration today that it’s win this series, or else, for Torre, a manager that has brought unprecedented success to the NY Yankees during your tenure, is completely laughable.
You don’t deserve to have Torre back next year. There are several other teams that would take him in a heartbeat. He doesn’t deserve the blame, but rather should be given a raise, for leading his team down the stretch and into the playoffs. I wonder if they had never made the playoffs due to all the things he can’t control, would you be firing him? The fact that they are still playing in October due to all the things he can control, should tell you something.
There have been rumors running rampant that you are suffering from something that causes you to be forgetful. Some say it’s the early stages of Alzheimer’s, others that it’s dementia.
As much as I would never wish a disease on anyone, I can only hope that there is some medical term that explains why you would fire a sure hall-of-famer for losing in the ALDS. Surely you are forgetting the successes over the years, including first and foremost, this year.
Firing Torre wouldn’t be the result of a disease or disorder, just pure stupidity.
