Rangers Rolling…But Now Must Win on the Road

The New York Rangers were the favorites of many to win Lord Stanley’s Cup this season following the flashy additions of free agent centers Scott Gomez and Chris Drury in the offseason. However, the Blueshirts quickly found themselves in the Atlantic Division’s cellar, and set message boards ablaze with the rantings of short-sighted fans declaring a return to the dark days of Valeri Kamensky and Stephane Quintal. Lost on many, it seems, is that while the team was not scoring, they were not being scored upon either, and instead they appeared to be a group searching for that missing ingredient that would turn those 1-goal losses into 1-goal victories.

If this team does go on to fulfill the Cup predictions of many, the words of veteran leader Brendan Shanahan may be a big reason why. On October 29th, the Post ran the following quote from Shanny, addressing the struggles of the then 3-6-1 squad:

Cowboys a huge test for Giants defense

Just exactly how much better is the New York Giants defense today than it was in Week 1 when the Dallas Cowboys torched the Giants for 45 points?

The numbers say a whole lot better. Since that game the Giants have registered 29 sacks and given up 114 points (16.3 points per game).

The Giants are looking forward to the challenge.

“I’m sure everybody in this locker room will tell you we’re a better defense than how we played in those first two games,” defensive end Justin Tuck said. “But it means nothing if we don’t go out there and do it this Sunday. It’s a tremendous opportunity for this defense to see exactly where we’re at.”

The defense is different now for several reasons. In Week 1 Michael Strahan was playing his first game after missing camp and was nowhere near ready to be productive. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo had not yet unleashed the four defensive end alignment no one has yet been able to block. Aaron Ross had not yet …
