laveranuescoles.jpgVia Mark Cannizzaro’s column in the NY Post, when asked if he thought the Patriots would go 16-0, Laveranues Coles’ response? “I hope so.”

My first reaction was, “How dare he?” And that’s still my reaction. For many reasons, but none more important than one of their remaining games is against his own team.

Also from Cannizzaro’s column:

“They have a chance to do something a lot of people have never done,” Coles said. “I wish them the best. They have a great team and they’ve weathered all the criticism. I just have a lot of respect for them as a team. I’ve never been the type of person to hate on anybody.

“I want good people to do good things and it seems like they have an excellent team. Why not want them to do well?

“Looking at their record and numbers, you can’t help but respect them and appreciate what they’ve done.”

Hello Laveranues! They are the arch enemy. The New England Patriots are to the Jets what the Joker is to Batman, Tweety to Sylvester, the Road Runner to Wylie E. Coyote. You can never, ever root for them. I don’t care what the circumstance.

History is the first man on the moon. It’s the Wright Brothers. It’s the ’72 Dolphins. But an undefeated season in 2007? That’s not history, it’s already been done.

I don’t care that the Patriots have already clinched the division and I’m still eating leftover turkey sandwiches. I don’t care that the Jets’ season ended before my first trick-or-treater arrived. They are still the stinkin’ Patriots.

What’s next? Are you going to don a hoodie on the sideline if you sit out that game with an injury? Will you be contributing to the “Pay Bill’s Fine” fund at the office? Maybe you can run on the field to pickup the kicking tee at one of their games so you can say you contributed to their 16-0 season.

Oh wait, that’s right, you can contribute. You can be part of one of the teams that loses to them during their so-called historical run.

We’re already dreading the “Take that you Tattle-Tale” Bowl when the Jets travel to Foxboro. Rumor has it they are installing a third digit for the home team’s score.

Laveranues, you shouldn’t be “wishing them the best.” Instead, you should be motivating your team to be the one to foil their perfect season. Good people or not, they’re the Patriots. You don’t have to hate them, but you have to hate losing to them, perfect season or not.

You can appreciate them and respect what they’ve done. But do it after they do it. Not a few weeks before your team has to play them.

I can only hope you were misquoted. I can only hope that you really don’t want to see them go undefeated. You’re a captain. A captain on the New York Jets football team. Public enemy number one of the Patriots and vice-versa. My guess is if the tables were turned we wouldn’t be reading quotes from Randy Moss about how he hopes the Jets go undefeated.

My guess is the Patriots would be quoted as saying they plan to be the only team to beat the Jets, no matter how inferior they might be.

My guess is they’d be figuring out a way to make the joke on us. They’d be planning a sneak attack on game day. They’d be making sure our path to success was impeded.

One thing is for sure, they wouldn’t be rooting for the enemy to win.

And neither should you.

Beep Beep!

I wouldn’t have a problem with this if the Jets didn’t have another game against the Pats. Especially considering the Jets pathetic play this season his attitude should be focused on salvaging something/anything by being the spoiler. I’m sure almost every other player on the team is hoping they finish the year 15-1.
