UPDATE: Reporting a moment ago on WFAN, Sweeny Murti stated that the Yankees seem to be under the impression that Johan Santana is on his way to Boston, and may be turning their attention to A’s pitcher Dan Haren.
Move away from the ledge, Yankee fans.
For better or worse, it appears – for the moment at least – that the Yanks are sticking to their guns in the Santana Sweepstakes. In his LoHud Yankees Blog, Peter Abraham reports that discussions between the Yanks and Twins hit a dead end last night as the Twins continue to request Ian Kennedy in addition to Phil Hughes and Melky Cabrera in New York’s package for the Minnesota ace. As such, Hank Steinbrenner‘s self-imposed Monday night deadline came and went, and the Yankee offer is allegedly off the table.
In light of this developement, the Sox appear to have reconsidered including center field stud Jacoby Ellsbury in their offer for Santana, and instead have emerged as the front-runners with a package of Jon Lester, Coco Crisp, Justin Masterson and Jed Lowrie. Evidently, the teams swapped medical records late last night – usually an indication that a deal is near. As Abraham states, somewhere in Nashville, Theo Epstein must be laughing hysterically.
