According to ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark, Toronto’s A.J. Burnett is the latest starting pitcher to be linked to the Mets. Burnett’s contract contains an opt-out clause for next winter, and I can’t imagine he’ll think too hard about exercising it should Johan Santana land with a division rival.

I get the feeling the Mets are discussing just about every major league pitcher that conceivably could be available. Burnett is an intriguing name, as he would presumable cost less than some of the other big name starters out there since he makes way too much money for a guy that also spends way too much time on the DL. Burnett tossed 165.2 innings for the Blue Jays in 2007 and just 135.2 innings in 2006 – a far cry from the 209 innings he compiled in 2005 while with the Marlins.

Nevertheless, Burnett is an electric talent, and was one of the best pitchers in baseball during the latter portion of last season.
