Lundqvist Yanked as Rangers Lose 6-2

Rangers Rumors & News

The New York Rangers entered the third period against the Toronto Maple Leafs Thursday night down 4-2 and decided to pull Henrik Lundqvist.
Do you think that maybe he needs a break?  Lundqvist has started in 9 out of the past 10 games and 26 out of 28 games overall.
So far, a third of the way through this season, even the biggest Devil’s fan would have to admit that Hank is a serious Vezina Trophy contender.  He entered today in the top three of the four major goalie statistics, first in wins (14), second in goals against average(1.91), second in shutouts(4), and third in save percentage(.927%).
Those stats aren’t going to last if he doesn’t get a breather soon.  He has given up four goals in each of the past two games.  Not only has he not done that yet this season, it’s only the second and third time he’s given up four goals or more in any games this season.
The major issue here is with backup Steve Valiquette.  While he …

Godzilla Takes San Francisco?

Yankees Rumors & News

Over at his LoHud Yankee Blog, Journal News beat writer Peter Abraham informs us that when questioned by the Japanese media whether Hideki Matsui could perhaps be traded this offseason, Yankees GM Brian Cashman offered a “no comment.” Very interesting.

With just two years and $26 million remaining on Godzilla’s deal, Matsui could be extremely appealing to a team like the Giants, who are desperate for a bat. According to Abraham, the Giants are interested, and perhaps would consider moving pitcher Noah Lowry in exchange for Matsui and a minor prospect.

Buster Olney alluded to this same report earlier today on ESPN.com.

Personally, I think Noah Lowry would get ripped apart in the American League, but what do I know? In my mind, the move makes more sense if Melky Cabrera is on his way to Minnesota, and the Yanks are looking for a replacement such as Randy Winn or Dave Roberts. Johnny Damon’s eroding defensive skills proved a major stumbling point for the …

Mets Rumors & News

Around this time last year there were numerous print profiles of Mets star Jose Reyes, most focusing on how he could be the most dynamic shortstop in the National League if not all of baseball. A year later, Phillies SS Jimmy Rollins is NL MVP, and fans and columnists want to ship Jose out of town in exchange for Johan Santana.

Fortunately, Reyes is going nowhere (though you could argue the same could be said of the Mets). Fame is a fickle friend, and as quickly as things seemed to have turned on Reyes, the Mets hierarchy is confident that things will swing back around just as swiftly. That’s life in Major League Baseball.

Meanwhile, in the New York Times today, reporter Ben Shpigel catches up with Reyes at his home in the Domincan Republic and provides fans with a wonderful look into Jose’s private life, upbringing, and outlook on 2008.

Among the article’s highlights, Reyes discusses his struggles from last season, and admits that for the first time …

Jets Jambalaya

Jets Rumors & News

A mix of interesting quotes from Eric Mangini’s Wednesday press conference via the New York Jets website:

We released Evan Prall from the practice squad. Danny Ware was signed to the Giants active roster. We signed Alvin Banks, running back, and Shaine Smith, wide receiver, to the practice squad. They’ll both be out there today.

On if it’s frustrating he hasn’t been able to use [Leon] Washington more as he did Sunday …

You’re really looking to get the yards per carry up for both those guys, and that’s a cumulative deal. But in terms of catching the ball, there’s been some times where you’d like to get him out in space, whether it be on screens or things like that, and some of those have been sniffed out by the defense and you don’t get it to him. But it’s trying to work him in a lot of different areas. It’s game-plan-specific.

On his relationship with [Cleveland Head Coach Romeo] Crennel …

Rac is a great friend, great guy. I was lucky to be with …

Jones Joins Joe in Dodger Blue

Mets Rumors & NewsYankees Rumors & News

So despite the insistence of super slime Scott Boras, it appears Andruw Jones was amenable to a short-term deal after all. Of course, the All-Star center fielder hardly had a choice.

Coming off a disastrous season in which he hit .222 (yet somehow drove in 94 runs), Jones settled for a two-year, $36.2 million contract late Wednesday night. The slugger had been looking for a deal in the 5-year, $90 million range that Torri Hunter got in Anaheim.

Jones, the winner of 10 consecutive Gold Gloves, will obviously patrol center for manager Joe Torre while incumbent center fielder Juan Pierre moves to one of the corner spots. Such an arrangement would mean that either Andre Ethier or Matt Kemp would be displaced in the outfield.

Kemp, one of the top young talents in the game, has been linked to both Johan Santana and Erik Bedard in various trade rumors. Stay tuned…
