So despite the insistence of super slime Scott Boras, it appears Andruw Jones was amenable to a short-term deal after all. Of course, the All-Star center fielder hardly had a choice.
Coming off a disastrous season in which he hit .222 (yet somehow drove in 94 runs), Jones settled for a two-year, $36.2 million contract late Wednesday night. The slugger had been looking for a deal in the 5-year, $90 million range that Torri Hunter got in Anaheim.
Jones, the winner of 10 consecutive Gold Gloves, will obviously patrol center for manager Joe Torre while incumbent center fielder Juan Pierre moves to one of the corner spots. Such an arrangement would mean that either Andre Ethier or Matt Kemp would be displaced in the outfield.
Kemp, one of the top young talents in the game, has been linked to both Johan Santana and Erik Bedard in various trade rumors. Stay tuned…
