Yankees Rumors & News

According to, the Yanks are on the verge of agreeing to a one-year, $3.75 million contract with reliever LaTroy Hawkins. Hawkins pitched last year with the NL Champion Rockies.

Now Brian Cashman has done a lot of good things for the Yankee organization, but it’s really time for someone to take the keys to the bullpen away from him. LaTroy Hawkins is awful. Kyle Farnsworth awful. Maybe worse. Ask the Cubs, Giants, and Orioles what they think of this guy.

To me, this move signals two things: A) The team has probably decided that Luis Vizcaino has priced himself out of pinstripes (and into Queens?), and B) Joba Chamberlain is not long for the rotation. As currently composed, this team has no one who can hand the ball to Mariano Rivera. No one.

No comment from Matsui over trade talk

Yankees Rumors & News

The Yankees have had dicussions this week with the Giants regarding Hideki Matsui. On Saturday, Matsui spoke publicly for the first time since his name was linked to trade rumors.

“I have not heard anything from the Yankees and my agent,” Matsui told Sankei Sports, the Japanese sports daily, in remarks translated by one of its reporters. “I cannot comment about any reports or rumors. I am going to think about (whether to waive the no-trade clause) only when the team or my agent calls me.”

“All I can do right now is to prepare for the next season. Especially I have to rehab for my right knee during this offseason.”

According to a source close to the situation, the talks regarding a trade are in the beginning stages. The Giants have interest in Matsui (.285 average, 25 homers, and 103 RBI in ’07) due to lack of power in their lineup, now that Barry Bonds isn’t returning next season. The Yankees have interest in lefties Jonathan Sanchez (1-5, …

Jets Try for Two Straight

Jets Rumors & News

For the first time this season the Jets hope to string two victories together against a Cleveland Browns team still in the playoff hunt.

The game will also feature the league’s best kick returners in Leon Washington and Josh Cribbs. Cribbs leads the league with a 31.2-yard return average and has two TD’s. Washington, second to Cribbs in return average with 30.6, has returned three kickoffs for touchdowns.

The Jets have pointed to sacks as a key to their recent wins, having compiled 13 sacks in their last three games (2 of them wins) after having only 9 in their first nine games. However, the Browns do not allow a lot of sacks, having given up only 11 in 406 pass attempts. So the Jets’ defensive line has its work cut out for them if they expect to get to Browns’ QB Derek Anderson.

The game could come down to a field goal. Mike Nugent has nailed 17 of his last 18 attempts, with his only miss coming from 54 yards. He has successfully converted his last 10 in a …
