According to ESPN.com, the Yanks are on the verge of agreeing to a one-year, $3.75 million contract with reliever LaTroy Hawkins. Hawkins pitched last year with the NL Champion Rockies.
Now Brian Cashman has done a lot of good things for the Yankee organization, but it’s really time for someone to take the keys to the bullpen away from him. LaTroy Hawkins is awful. Kyle Farnsworth awful. Maybe worse. Ask the Cubs, Giants, and Orioles what they think of this guy.
To me, this move signals two things: A) The team has probably decided that Luis Vizcaino has priced himself out of pinstripes (and into Queens?), and B) Joba Chamberlain is not long for the rotation. As currently composed, this team has no one who can hand the ball to Mariano Rivera. No one.

Hawkins stinks. There is one good thing, though. He is getting a one-year contract instead of these stupid three- and four-year deals a bunch of these middle guys have been getting. That is what Vizcaino wants, and why he won’t be a Yankee in 2008. One-year deal, and if he sucks, just release him and move on.
It’s a 1-year deal so really whats the worst that can happen? He bombs and gets the Ron Villone treatment. The Yankees payroll can more than absorb $3 mil. This is better than giving any reliever 3+ years.
you’re both correct, but i still find it funny. when i saw hawkins’ name on the list of FA, I joked that Cashman would go after him cause he fits the profile. big arm that’s bounced around from team to team, been tried as a closer in several spots only to fail in spectacular fashion. and cashman is going to give you the same song and dance that he continues to spew when discussing farnsworth. i’d like to know, is it cash? is it his major league scouts? obviously the minor league evaluators are not the problem. but it continues to be an absurd trend. someone called up mike and the mad dog last week and said that if Cashman thinks the Twins are asking too much for Santana, then the Yanks should pull the trigger on the deal, because whatever Cash thinks of a major league pitcher, the team should do the opposite. that’s comical. also, make no mistake, this is your new two-head setup combo. Farnsworth and Hawkins. my god. it’s easy to write this off now, but talk to me in 2008 when you’re pulling your hair out. at the very least, i’m now convinced that the Yanks will open the season with Joba in the rotation. There is no way they go out and sign this guy if they don’t intend to give he and Farnsworth the 7th and 8th. Which means you are gonna have to suffer through these fools until the organization relents and moves Joba BACK to the bullpen. that is gonna be an infuriating process for fans.
