Giants: ‘Kudos & Wet Willies’

The New York Giants did a lot of things right Sunday against Philadelphia. They also got a couple of breaks on calls and survived a tremendous game-tying 57-yard kick by David Akers that clanged off the right upright.

akers missesAt 9-4 the Giants are in good playoff position now. So, without any further babbling let’s get to the good stuff — the ‘Kudos & Wet Willies.’

Kudos to …

• Plaxico Burress: How does ‘Game Day’ keep doing it? Burress has a badly injured ankle and never practices, yet he keeps showing up on Sundays and making plays. Against the Eagles, he made a bunch of them, catching 7 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown. Question his effort in the past, wonder if he should rest, but admire what he is doing.

• Kawika Mitchell: Had his best game as a Giant, registering 10 solo tackles. Mitchell came to the Giants on a one-year contract as a free agent from Kansas City. I would think GM Jerry Reese will have to think seriously about trying to keep Mitchell in blue next season.

• The Replacements: Craig Dahl, Reggie Torbor, Kevin Dockery and Michael Johnson were after-thoughts when the season started. With the Giants beat up at linebacker and in the secondary all four played prominent roles Sunday. They combined for 22 tackles and no key mistakes in coverage.

• Eli Manning: Only 17-of-31, but no interceptions and no really poor throws the entire game. Probably his most efficient performance in several weeks.

• The Right Upright at Lincoln Financial Field. It was positioned beautifully on the potential game-tying field goal by Philadelphia’s David Akers. The adorable yellow upright placed itself in exactly the right spot to jump up, bat down Akers’ kick and help the Giants escape from Philly with a 9-4 record.

Wet Willies to …

• Brandon Jacobs: A decent day yardage-wise with 70 yards on 22 carries. But Jacobs lost two fumbles that could have been devastating if not for great work by the Giants defense.

• Jeremy Shockey: One measly catch for a measly 4 yards. Shockey still has talent, but you have to wonder if he will ever be a consistently dominant tight end again.
