The New York Giants did a lot of things right Sunday against Philadelphia. They also got a couple of breaks on calls and survived a tremendous game-tying 57-yard kick by David Akers that clanged off the right upright.

akers missesAt 9-4 the Giants are in good playoff position now. So, without any further babbling let’s get to the good stuff — the ‘Kudos & Wet Willies.’

Kudos to …

Plaxico Burress: How does ‘Game Day’ keep doing it? Burress has a badly injured ankle and never practices, yet he keeps showing up on Sundays and making plays. Against the Eagles, he made a bunch of them, catching 7 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown. Question his effort in the past, wonder if he should rest, but admire what he is doing.

Kawika Mitchell: Had his best game as a Giant, registering 10 solo tackles. Mitchell came to the Giants on a one-year contract as a free agent from Kansas City. I would think GM Jerry Reese will have to think seriously about trying to keep Mitchell in blue next season.

The Replacements: Craig Dahl, Reggie Torbor, Kevin Dockery and Michael Johnson were after-thoughts when the season started. With the Giants beat up at linebacker and in the secondary all four played prominent roles Sunday. They combined for 22 tackles and no key mistakes in coverage.

Eli Manning: Only 17-of-31, but no interceptions and no really poor throws the entire game. Probably his most efficient performance in several weeks.

• The Right Upright at Lincoln Financial Field. It was positioned beautifully on the potential game-tying field goal by Philadelphia’s David Akers. The adorable yellow upright placed itself in exactly the right spot to jump up, bat down Akers’ kick and help the Giants escape from Philly with a 9-4 record.

Wet Willies to …

Brandon Jacobs: A decent day yardage-wise with 70 yards on 22 carries. But Jacobs lost two fumbles that could have been devastating if not for great work by the Giants defense.

Jeremy Shockey: One measly catch for a measly 4 yards. Shockey still has talent, but you have to wonder if he will ever be a consistently dominant tight end again.

    • Comment on Rangers Trade For Jokinen by Rob A from BBD
You're questioning my credibility to bash moves? I question your ability to judge any moves at all. 2 days after the Rangers made the very obvious disaster of signing Wade Redden to a crippling contract you emailed me and said that the Rangers were making your dreams come true. In another email you told me that you were never more excited about the Rang […]
    • Comment on Rangers Trade For Jokinen by Jeff Zachowski
Come on, Rob. You wear your Sather Hatred like a chip on your shoulder. You're not the only one around here who hates the guy. But in order to have credibility when you bash moves, you have to be fair on the good ones. Did you ever think that he'd be able to unload the remaining FIVE years on Gomez's pact while not taking back salary beyond th […]

This is only a good deal because it gets rid of Kotalik. I doubt Jokinen is going to make a difference. I can't congratulate Sather for making up for his own mistake when the biggest mistake, Redden, is still out there for the next five, ?, years. […]
    • Comment on This Week in Rangers Hockey (Jean Ratelle Edition) by Ben
Jean Ratelle was not only a gentleman on the ice but off it as well. Living in Long Beach, I grew up with the Rangers as my neighbors and Jean was always happy to give the local kids sticks and pucks so we could play in the street. His time with the Rangers was the golden age of hockey. I saw him fight only once and even that he did like a gentleman. No one […]
    • Comment on What I Wish I Could Say About the Rangers by Rob A from BBD
Great article. The one thing I think about when I want to remember that it could be worse is Henrik Lundqvist. Imagine how bad this team would be without such a strong goalie. Fire Sather. […]
