Happy Holidays from Hot Stove New York

‘Kudos & Wet Willies,’ Christmas joy edition

Giants Rumors & News

It’s a joyous day for New York Giants’ fans.

Facing a 14-0 deficit Sunday and staring at another late-season collapse, the 10-5 Giants fought their way to a 38-21 victory and a third straight playoff appearance.

There are plenty of ‘Kudos’ to be doled out, and a couple of ‘Wet Willies,’ so let’s get started.

Kudos to …

Ahmad Bradshaw: If you didn’t know this is where I was going to start today, you weren’t paying attention Sunday. Bradshaw had the breakout game the Giants and their fans have been anticipating, and he showed up just in time. His 88-yard touchdown run broke open a tight game and propelled the Giants into the playoffs. His 17-carry, 151-yard performance means the Giants have added another playmaker to their arsenal.

Brandon Jacobs: The big beast ran over the Bills for a career-high 145 yards on 24 carries, including a season-best 43-yard touchdown run. Maybe the best thing Jacobs did all day, though, was sprain an ankle and force the Giants to …

Remember the Titans

Jets Rumors & News

The Tennessee Titans came into today’s game playing for their playoff lives. They got help from the Bengals earlier in the day as they defeated the Browns 19 – 14. That meant, with a victory, Tennessee would be in control of their own destiny, needing only to defeat the Colts in week 17 to get into the playoffs as the last AFC Wild Card team.

As expected, Kellen Clemens’ rib injury kept him out of the lineup and Chad Pennington was put back into familiar territory as the Jets’ starting QB. He often looked like the Chad of old, completing 26 of 32 passes for a very high percentage. But also like the Chad of old he had a costly red-zone interception and a horribly underthrown pick to end two drives. The red zone interception came after Eric Mangini chose to take 3 points off the board. Mike Nugent had converted on a 37-yard field goal but a Titan penalty gave the Jets an automatic first down. Mangini chose to take the first and goal at …

Kobe would play for the Knicks

Knicks Rumors & News

Could Kobe Bryant actually come to the rescue of the New York Knicks?

The Los Angeles Lakers superstar told Newsday that despite their struggles the Knicks remain on the short list of teams to which he would accept a trade.

“I would look at it as just another challenge to prove that you can win,” Bryant said. “That’s how I would approach it. I wouldn’t be down about it. I’d just work that much harder to try to prove that if we do work hard, we can win ballgames.

If I was Isiah Thomas I would be on the phone with Lakers’ General Manager Mitch Kupchak right now seeing if there is any way to make this actually happen.

The Knicks are a moribund franchise and Thomas has provided only embarrassment, not improvement, during his four years with the team.

Finding some way to put Bryant in a Knicks’ uniform could be his only chance to change all that.

Don’t count on it happening, though, Knicks’ fans. It’s impossible to …

Former Yanks reliever tells his tale of drug abuse

Yankees Rumors & News

The aftermath of the Mitchell Report has seen admissions and denials. Along with the admissions, we’ve heard the motives and stories as to why players decided to use steroids and HGH. In Sunday’s NY Daily News, former Yankees reliever Dan Naulty tells his story of his drug use. An interesting piece, it’s a definite read. Here are some highlights of his story…

“The night we won the World Series, I wanted to die. I didn’t want to live. On the night that you would think was a big, happy celebration night, I wanted to die because my emotional state was in such disarray that I started thinking about suicide.””This is a story of a boyhood dream turning into a living nightmare. I had ruined my life, but at what cost?”

“Nobody ever told me, “Do whatever you need to do to gain weight.” Nobody ever said, “If you’ve got to take drugs, man, take ’em.” What everybody said was, “You’re 6-6. Put on 50 pounds and you’ll throw …

Jets Pre-Game Preview

Jets Rumors & News

The NY Jets will head into their 4:15pm showdown in Tennessee without the services of captain Laveranues Coles. Following a concussion against the Bills, an ankle injury against the Patriots, and limited playing time in between and after, Coles has been placed on injured reserve and will miss the final two games of the season.

Chad Pennington won the team’s Dennis Byrd award for the most inspirational player on the team, clearly an indication of his upbeat commitment to the squad following a benching midway through the season. It is Pennington’s second Byrd award in a row. He won it last year after starting all 16 games for the Jets following what many thought would be a career-ending shoulder injury and surgery.

To no one’s surprise there is no update on who will be Sunday’s starting QB. As expected, it will be a game-time decision. In fact, don’t be surprised if nobody knows until the first series. All reports are indicating there is no way Kellen Clemens will be able to effectively play QB, so don’t be surprised …

Washington Named MVP

Jets Rumors & News

Second-year RB/KR Leon Washington has been voted MVP by his NY Jets’ teammates. On Friday, Washington was awarded the Curtis Martin Most Valuable Player award in an apparent landslide vote.

Via Bart Hubbuch of the NY Post, Washington had this to say about the prestigious award:

“So many great guys in this long history of this organization have their name on the hallway of [the team’s practice facility], so it says a lot about what your teammates think of you.”

Filling in for the injured Justin Miller in week 2, Washington set a club record with three kickoff returns for touchdowns and averages 28.2 yards per return, second best in the league behind Cleveland’s Joshua Cribbs.

Washington has come a long way from his infamous lap-running days at training camp for frequent fumbles and stupid penalties. So far in fact, that he might be heading to Hawaii should something happen to Cribbs. Washington was voted the first reserve as the AFC kick returner.

Gaborik Scores Five to Beat Rangers

Rangers Rumors & News

Marian Gaborik scored five goals and added an assist as his team, the Minnesota Wild, beat the Rangers 6-3 last night at Madison Square Garden.
Gaborik scored one in the first period, two power-play goals in the second, and two more in the third to cap off an amazing night.
“One time I got five goals when I was playing back home for a pro club back there, but this is just totally different,” Gaborik said in the NY Post.  “You score five goals in the NHL it’s just a totally different experience. To reach it here with these guys in front of our fans is just unbelievable.”
The first five-goal game of Gaborik’s career was the first in the NHL since Sergei Federov in 1996.  With the assist on Pierre-Marc Bouchard’s goal in the second Gaborik tied his career high with 6 points in a game.  He last had six on October 26,2002 against the Phoenix Coyotes.
Henrik Lundqvist was the victim of five-goal outbreak and allowed all six goals …

Picking on Isiah was never easier

Knicks Rumors & News

I love to pick on Isiah Thomas and James Dolan.

Well, Larry Fleisher of Inside Hoops has made that waaaaay too easy, combing the archives of the New York Times for great Thomas quotes during his Knicks’ tenure.

Kudos to True Hoop for finding this first.

Here are a few of my favorites.

“I wanted to put together a team that was exciting for the fans to come and watch, a team that had some character and some guts, but also a team that you can grab a box of popcorn and grab a soda and enjoy the game. ”You want players and you want a team that people want to see. I think this is a team that when everyone is healthy and playing well, it can be an exciting team that people will want to see and talk about.” — February 15, 2004

“As long as I’m the president of basketball operations here in New York, I don’t see myself coaching the New York Knicks,” he said. “And I wish you would stop …

Chad Is Likely Starter With Kellen Grounded

Jets Rumors & News

While the headline in yesterday’s New York Times read “Clemens Will Start If Healthy,” the Daily News and Newark Star-Ledger reported that Kellen Clemens had been all but ruled out for Sunday’s game in Tennessee and that Chad Pennington would instead start at quarterback. Today, the rest of the media seems to have caught on, as the local beat writers offer their own eerily similar takes on Chad’s situation and his future with Gang Green.

Yankees Rumors & News

Curt Schilling, of the Boston Red Sox, has called on Roger Clemens to clear his name or give back four of his Cy Young Awards.

“Roger has denied every allegation brought to the table so, my thought is that Roger will find a way in short order to organize a legal team to guarantee a retraction of the allegations made, a public apology is made, and his name is completely cleared,” said Schilling on his blog, 38pitches.com. “If he doesn’t do that then there aren’t many options.”

Then, 33 months after denying his own steroid allegations in front of congress, Schilling said, “The 4 Cy Youngs should go to the rightful winners and the numbers should go away.”

This is an issue that has come up already when Schilling demanded that, “Everything [Canseco] ever did should be wiped clean. I think his MVP should go back and should go to the runner-up.”

Canseco countered Schillings demands saying, “He lied before Congress and he was reprimanded for it.” Canseco added, …
