After finally playing at full-strength for practically the first time all season, the Rangers suddenly find themselves significantly banged up in the wake of Saturday’s shootout loss in Edmonton. The Blueshirts return to the Garden tonight minus Marty Straka, who is sidelined with a concussion, Brendan Shanahan, who suffered a scary knee-on-knee collision but thankfully hobbled off with a mere contusion, and Sean Avery, who once again has an injured hand – the right one, this time – and will miss at least a week while they wait for the swelling to subside.

The sudden multitude of injuries creates the unusual circumstance where you could see an entire line from the Hartford Wolfpack reunited tonight in New York. According to the Journal News’ Sam Weinman, it’s Coach Tom Renney preference to have Chris Drury slide over to left wing and take Straka’s slot alongside Scott Gomez and Jaromir Jagr, while Nigel Dawes skates with Wolfpack linemates Greg Moore and Pierre Parenteau.

Of course, that plan could change very quickly, as Moore evidently has the flu, did not skate this morning, and is now questionable for tonight’s matchup. In that event, the Rangers would find themselves short a man, and would be forced to use Jason Strudwick as a fourth line winger while reinserting Marek Malik into the defense corp.

A strange, strange sequence of events for the Blueshirts.
