According to Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum, while the organization will “listen to anything” this offseason, the team plans to retain QB Chad Pennington rather than trade him and his $4.8 million salary for next season. Pennington has made it clear that he still views himself as a starter in the league, and Tannenbaum indicated that he wouldn’t be opposed to Chad resuming that role in New York. “I expect him to be back and I expect him to compete with Kellen [Clemens],” said the GM.

As the Daily News’ Rich Cimini puts it, “Chad Pennington wasn’t good enough to keep his job and Kellen Clemens wasn’t good enough to claim it – hardly an ideal quarterback situation for the Jets.” But in a weak market for quarterbacks, it is the unenviable situation in which Gang Green finds themselves.

Of course, Tannenbaum could simply be looking to build some leverage for himself in potential trade discussions this offseason. Time will tell.
