Yesterday we wondered aloud whether the latest report that the Yankees had pulled Phil Hughes off the table was big news or no news at all. To hear Hank Steinbrenner tell it, it was no news. Via the Star-Ledger:

“There wasn’t an official offer anyway. You can’t withdraw something that wasn’t there,” Steinbrenner said. “There was no official offer on the table at this time.”

In fact, according to the New York Times, the Yankees have not had a formal offer on the table since December’s winter meetings. The Yanks will remain a player in this game until the “last call,” however the team is content to wait until the price tag comes down.

But exactly when will that be? Pitchers and catchers are due to report in about a month’s time, yet not only does Johan Santana not know where he’ll be reporting to camp, but neither do Erik Bedard or Joe Blanton, both pitchers that could be dealt once the dust clears. It’s amazing how a promising hot stove season has morphed into a total traffic jam as teams around the league wait to see what the Twins will do.
