Mara’s Facial Could Force Sather’s Hand

Rangers Rumors & News

Via Sam Weinman’s Rangers Report:

The Rangers announced Paul Mara is out for two weeks as a result of the hit Saturday night in Buffalo. Whether this forces the Rangers hand when dealing before the deadline remains to be seen. Put it this way: it can’t help.

According to ESPN, Mara is scheduled for facial surgery. Ouch.

Ironically, Mara was the team’s sole deadline acquisition last season. This development signals two things to me, A) GM Glen Sather is very unlikely to move Marek Malik, who is no longer expendable, regardless of his issues with coach Tom Renney, and B) It seems hard to believe that one of Dan Boyle or Brian Campbell won’t find their way into a Rangers sweater by tomorrow’s trade deadline.

Unfortunately, it’s likewise difficult to imagine either player arriving without costing a player such as Nigel Dawes. I’d be a bit less reluctant to part with Petr Prucha, whose star has dimmed considerably since his breakout rookie …

Wilson drawing interest from Eagles

Giants Rumors & News

The Giants want to keep unrestricted free agent safety Gibril Wilson, and it looks like their primary competition might come from a division rival — the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Philadelphia Inquirer is reporting that the Eagles are ready to set their sights on luring Wilson away from the Giants.

As I’ve said before, Wilson is the one free agent the Giants absolutely have to keep.

It looks like the price for doing so just went up.

Hughes impressive in BP session/Pettitte throws

Yankees Rumors & News

A few news and notes from Yankees camp today….

Andy Pettitte threw another BP session while also working on a slidestep. Pettitte who is known for having one of the best pickoff moves in the league is trying to further aggrivate baserunners. He feels as if his pickoff move is good enough for runners on first base but needs a move to combat runners on second base from stealing third base. The slidestep should help.

“I have to figure out some way to keep them from doing that,” he said.

In the big news of the day, Phil Hughes also threw BP and looked very impressive. He faced Johnny Damon, Derek Jeter, Bobby Abreu and Francisco Cervelli. His curveball seemed to be in mid-season form. A positive pitching session for the future of the franchise. Not one of the four hitters Hughes faced made good contact. Hughes was bothered by his hamstring injury last season when he returned to the rotation. This was apparent when Hughes pitched and his velocity suffered as a …

Jets, Tuna Could Fight For Faneca

Jets Rumors & News

According to SI’s Peter King, the Jets plan to pursue Pittsburgh Steelers 31-year-old guard Alan Faneca. According to the same report, the Jets do not currently plan to go after Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel, as had widely been rumored and assumed.

Last week, JetsCentral relayed a report from the Miami Herald in which it was reported that Bill Parcells had advised the Jets’ brain trust to sign Faneca last year, meaning you can pretty much mark it down that the new Executive Vice President of Football Operations for the Fish will be competing with Team Tangini for the veteran lineman’s services. Via the Miami Herarld:

Parcells told the Jets that taking Faneca would bring stability to their offensive line and help turn young tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson and young center Nick Mangold into better players. So now I think Parcells will take his own advice because the Dolphins need a fine guard to bring stability to their young center Samson Satele and their left tackle (whoever …

Will This Deadline Cause Another Big Splash?

Islanders Rumors & News

Almost a year ago to the day, Islanders GM Garth Snow shook up the hockey universe by trading for “Captain Canada” Ryan Smyth. Snow showed every team in the NHL, that the Islanders are no longer the punchline of everybody’s joke. But if Islanders fans thought Snow was in a tough position last year, oh boy.

The Islanders are on the outside looking in when it comes to the playoff picture. Currently the Islanders have 67 points and are 1 out of the final spot for the playoffs. 3 weeks ago, if a fan was asked if the Islanders should be “buyers” or “sellers” at the trade deadline, the answer almost indefinitely would have been “sellers”. But due to their recent play, that answer may have changed. Going through a 7-game losing streak and then transitioning into a 6-game winning streak, has put Snow in one mighty bind. With the trade deadline a little over a day away, rumors are swirling about possible moves the Islanders will or won’t make.

The most popular of these rumors …
