Bye Bye Bergie

Islanders Rumors & News is reporting that the Islanders have sent defenseman Marc Andre Bergeron  to the Anaheim Ducks for a 3rd round draft choice.

Bergeron was the only threat the Islanders had on the power play this year. GM Garth Snow said he was not going to “sell” his players. I wonder what he calls this?

Rangers Deal Montoya, Li’l Hossa

Rangers Rumors & News

The Rangers have dealt goaltending prospect Al Montoya and forward Marcel Hossa to the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for Fredrik Sjostrom, David Leneveu, and Josh Gratton.

I’m not sure if there were still any fans out there that believed Montoya was considered a blue-chip prospect – especially after the former first-round pick lost his job in Hartford this season to the unheralded Miika Wiikman. Nevertheless, this is a blow to a franchise that, at the very least, expected to be able to spin the highly-touted Montoya for a valuable asset in the wake of Henrik Lundqvist’s emergence as a premier NHL netminder.

Instead, the goaltender has been swapped for a few equally under-performing prospects, rendering Montoya, along with Hugh Jessiman, another utter bust of a first-round draft selection in the Glen Sather era. It begs the question why Montoya wasn’t moved sooner, even last season, when Lundvist was so clearly the organization’s franchise goalie.

Thank God for Marc Staal.

Islanders Rumors & News

It is being reported that the Islanders have traded one of my favorite players, Chris Simon, to the Minnesota Wild for a 6th round draft pick.

Goodbye Chris, it has not been a pleasure

Hossa To the Pens Headlines NHL Deadline Day

Right at the buzzer, Pittsburgh acquires Marian Hossa and Pascal Dupuis in exchange for Angelo Esposito, Colby Armstrong, Erik Christensen, and a 1st Round Pick.

All day the teams that you’ve been hearing have been Montreal and Ottawa. Now Pittsburgh swoops in at the last moment to steal the spotlight. I hate to say it, especially about a division rival, but nice work, you tuxedoed fowls.

As far as deadlines go, especially in a salary cap era, today was fairly eventful. Here are some other news of note:

Ottawa acquired some leadership and toughness in the form of Martin Lapointe, but they’d hoped to land Hossa and failed miserably.

Toronto is in full-on rebuilding mode. Unfortunately, all their major assets have no-trade clauses, and no one wants to waive them. As a result, only Wade Belak and Chad Kilger were on the move today, heading to Florida, God knows why.

The Capitals acquired goalie Cristobal Huet from Montreal in the first of a trio of moves that clearly signaled that the …

Rangers Make a Move!

Rangers Rumors & News

The Rangers have acquired Christian Backman from the St. Louis Blues for a 4th round pick.

Thanks J.D.!

Well this addresses the team’s need for depth on the blue-line at least. I might’ve shot myself if the Rangers hadn’t done something to address that obvious need today. Still, this is a squad that could have benefited mentally from some key reinforcements, and clearly, they’re not coming…

Via Sam Weinman:

The 27-year-old Swede was a teammate of Henrik Lundqvist on the 2006 gold medal winners. He has 10 points in 45 games and just came back from a broken foot.

Islanders Bring in D-Man Davison

Islanders Rumors & News

The Islanders made their first big splash, well maybe they made their first ripple.

The Islanders website is reporting the team acquired veteran defenseman Rob Davison from the San Jose Sharks for a 7th round draft pick.

Isles Selling? Satan, Fedotenko In Play…

Islanders Rumors & News

Via The Fourth Period:

[1:25pm] Relatively quiet on the Rangers/Islanders front. All that means is that nobody’s talking. Miro Satan and Ruslan Fedotenko could be gone, with the Predators interested in both.

Rangers Don’t Acquire Prospect Schremp

Rangers Rumors & News

update 4:24pm…
The deadline has officially passed and the last of the deals seem to have been announced. Robbie Schremp is still an Oiler. The Rangers, meanwhile, have moved largely laterally today. Disappointing.

update 3:41pm…
The last bunch of trades are trickling in now, and still no confirmation of Schremp. Appears all the talk was BOGUS.

update 1:31pm…
still looking for independent confirmation, so treat this as rumor until further notice…

According to Hockey Trade Rumors (who have been pretty spot-on all day), it’s rumored that the Rangers have acquired Robbie Schremp from the Edmonton Oilers. We’ll let you know as this is confirmed or debunked.

Larry Brooks first reported in the Post this week on the Rangers interest in Schremp, the Oilers’ first-round pick in 2004. According to Brooks, Schremp has been “toiling in Springfield (AHL) and has fallen out of favor with GM Kevin Lowe.”

Schremp recorded 57 goals and 145 points for the OHL London in 2005-2006, but has just 14 goals along with 38 assists …

Campbell Knows Way To San Jose

Rangers Rumors & News

So much for that idea.

According to the Canadian Press, the San Jose Sharks have acquired impending free agent defenseman Brian Campbell from the Buffalo Sabres. Unable to reach an agreement with the defenseman, and likely terrified of another Daniel Briere/ Chris Drury scenario, the Sabres had no choice to move the “smooth-skating blueliner.”

In exchange, the Sabres will receive right wing Steve Bernier and a 1st round pick in 2008.

Admittedly, I don’t know much about Bernier, but this seems like a deal the Rangers could’ve made. Would an offer of Bernier and a 1st rounder trump an offer of Nigel Dawes or Petr Prucha plus a 1st rounder? It might, but I’m curious if the Rangers even put an offer like that on the table.

Devs Deal Janssen, Add Defenseman Salvador

Devils Rumors & News

The Devils have traded popular enforcer Cam Janssen in exchange for St. Louis Blues defenseman Bryce Salvador.

“In Bryce Salvador, we have acquired a veteran NHL defenseman with good size and strength who plays a physical game,” said GM Lou Lamoriello, via “We look forward to the depth Bryce will bring to our roster.”

As a Ranger fan, I won’t be sad to see Cam go. That guy had jackhammers for fists. However, if you’re a Devs fan having some trouble cutting the cord, here’s a compilation of some of some Janssen’s “greatest hits.”

Deadline Looms | Rangers Running Out Of Options

Rangers Rumors & News

On the eve of the NHL trading deadline, the market got a little bit thinner last night as the Tampa Bay Lightning agreed to a six-year, $40 million extension with dynamic defenseman and powerplay quarterback Dan Boyle. The buzz around the league had been that Tampa couldn’t afford a deal such as this without first moving the contract of center Brad Richards. Instead it seems the team has dealt Vinny Prospal to the Flyers, while Richards’ future with the team remains cloudy.

Boyle had been connected to the Rangers in trade discussions for weeks now, with the Post’s Larry Brooks in particular giving the story some steam over the last several days.

Meanwhile, in St. Louis, the Blues have reached a four-year, $14.4 million contract extension with defenseman Barret Jackman, who likewise had been linked to the Rangers on the rumor mill. While Jackman would have represented a very different sort of addition to the Blueshirts’ blueline, he is “the …

Comrie Re-signed

Islanders Rumors & News is reporting that the Islanders have re-signed Mike Comrie to a 1 year extension. Comrie’s name has been thrown around in trade rumors but it looks as if he is not going anywhere.

The first line center has 18 goals and 28 assists so far on the year.
