According to MetsBlog.com, the Mets and Tigers are discussing a trade involving Mets reliever Jorge Sosa and Tigers utilityman Marcus Thames.
My guess is that the Mets feel like they have enough arms in the bullpen that Sosa has become expendable. Either that or they realize that Willie Randolph burnt out Sosa like the end of a Red Auerbach cigar.
Thames would make a great partner to platoon Ryan Church with. The Mets have been looking for somebody to counter the weak hitting of Church against left handed pitching. Thames batted .310 against lefties last year while Church hit a dismal .229. Thames may also fill the role of the Mets backup first baseman if Carlos Delgado goes down with an injury.

I think the Mets would still like to give Church the opportunity to play every day, and more than anything it’s the injury status of Carlos Delgado that is forcing the Mets hand. Thames plays a bit of first base, and Jimmy Leyland has been talking up Thames’ skills at the position this spring.
Trading Sosa also opens up a spot for a guy like Steven Register (who the Mets would lose altogether otherwise) while El Duque can potentially slot in as the long man in the pen.
Jon Heyman, who broke the story on WFAN, indicated that Sosa wouldn’t be enough to get a deal done, so I wonder what else the Mets would be willing to part with. The Tigers need a setup man, but I don’t think Duaner or Heilman are going anywhere.
